| Kheldar06-02-06, 04:35 PM | The situation: An unseen (but not invisble) foe is approaching the party. My cavaliaer-type character scrambles to get on his mount, but fails his fast mount check, so mounting takes a move action. For my standard action he readies a charge aginst the approaching monster when he sees it come out of the woods. Does this work? Or have I taken too many actions. He's just gotten on his mount, and he only has a standard action left. I think this means he can do a readied charge (albeit he can only move his normal amount now, not double his movement) but can he draw his weapon as part of that charge action? Or does this action not work at all? Thanks :) - Kheldar |
| tarkin06-02-06, 04:51 PM | Strict or Loose Game: No. Charge is not a regular move, neither is mounting your animal. You need the feat Quick Draw. Power DM/Anything Goes DM: House Rule to allow you do it. Who needs that silly feat QuickDraw? It is just for people that throw weapons. |
| Kheldar06-02-06, 05:07 PM | Yeah, that makes sense to me. Somewhere I thought I read drawing a weapon could be done as part of a charge action if you had +1 BAB, but a re-look at the rules just said it could be done in a "regular move action." Thanks for helping me out! - Kheldar |

Or does this action not work at all?Note that if you charged on a horse as part of a full round action (as you are supposed to), you could technically draw your weapon as the horse is moving. From the rules (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/specialAttacks.htm#mountedCombat): "If your mount charges, you also take the AC penalty associated with a charge. If you make an attack at the end of the charge, you receive the bonus gained from the charge." |
| Inigo Carmine06-02-06, 06:54 PM | For my standard action he readies a charge aginst the approaching monster when he sees it come out of the woods. Also, charging is a fullround action in 3.5, and thus can't be readied. |
| mvincent06-02-06, 06:59 PM | charging is a fullround action in 3.5, and thus can't be readied.Correct, although some people believe that zombies and slowed individuals can ready a charge (since they are restricted to standard actions). I personally don't allow that as it appears to merely be a rules quirk that doesn't seem to be within the writer's intent. |
| Tsuul06-02-06, 08:14 PM | I would allow that standard action charge to be readied, but its probably not RAW legal. It's only usable when you are forced only a standard action on your turn (like the surprise round). |
| SilentOne06-02-06, 08:21 PM | Correct, although some people believe that zombies and slowed individuals can ready a charge (since they are restricted to standard actions). I personally don't allow that as it appears to merely be a rules quirk that doesn't seem to be within the writer's intent. And some people would be correct. It's called a partial charge (go on, look it up). Basically, it's a charge, except only at normal movement, and only (here's the key part) when you are limited to standard or move actions. Not just when you want to do something else and charge. |
| mvincent06-02-06, 08:38 PM | And some people would be correct. It's called a partial charge (go on, look it up).I am aware of what a partial charge is oh SilentOne. The point is that you normally cannot ready a charge (this appears to be as intended). You should not suddenly be allowed to ready a charge because you are slowed, nauseated, it is a surprise round, or you are a zombie. That is an unintended quirk. Alternately, you could interpret that the writer's intended for a charge to always be readiable, but that interpretation of intent does not seem supportable and it creates a lot of problems. But this has all been discussed before (and fairly well resolved) here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=9056326) (go on, look it up). |
