| Elessara07-20-05, 04:03 PM | Is there an ability that would cause a weapon to be silent when you use it in combat? When you're swinging a weapon, they generally do make some sort of noise (the bigger ones at any rate) ... the woosh of a blade through the air, the twang of a bow string, the crack of a whip ... for example. I'd like to remove the possibity of making this noise. Thanks in advance. Ele~ |

I've run into problems where someone had silence and party communication was completely dead. But it wouldn't be unreasonable to have a +2000 gp weapon ability called silenced. A silenced weapon makes virtually no sound when used. Enemies cannot hear you firing a silenced bow or hear the rattle of a silenced spiked chain. This has no effect on noise generated by your armor or other equipment or your own speech. |

They do take some range off. (DM adjudicated penalty to range increment.) Obviously, this dosn't make arrows thudding through plate any less noisy. Arrows of silence whould make a great magic weapon. Just have it centered on where the arrow goes off. But should have a baseline cost given how much it hoses arcane spellcasters? |
| Watchman07-21-05, 12:30 PM | Just use something stabby. The main source of noise with, say, a knife or sword thrust (that's not actively defended against with something, obviously) is the movement of the wielder (plus creak and rustling and so on of clotches, armour etc.) and then whatever very little is produced by the blade sinking into flesh. Can't say I've much practical experience in poking meat with pointy things at velocity, but I do suspect it's not all that noisy. The other guy dying, dropping what he's holding etc. are likely much more of a stealth problem than the stab itself. 'Course, if the other guy happens to have a breastplate under his or her clotches not only is your sneaky stab between the ribs going to meet an untimely end, there'll also be the annoying and distinctive clang you get when metal hits metal... |
