| Welcome10-10-04, 06:04 AM | I have this Iaijutsu Master build in the works and I'm wondering about this. See, I'm in melee, the enemy is flat-footed, the sword is sheathed, so the first attack of my full-attack is a iaijutsu strike. Since a iaijutsu strike is made with one hand (no rule on this but as far as I know, that's the only way you can do it IRL if the scabbard is at the waist), I was wondering if I could switch to THF for the remaining attacks. Couldn't find anything in the SRD about this... |

| Welcome10-10-04, 08:47 AM | Why not? Because there's a change in combat mechanic. If I'd asked if I could switch from 2HF to 2WF in the middle of a full-attack (provided I had quick-draw etc), the answer would probably be no, because 2WF brings about changes in mechanics that make it incompatible with 2HF in the same round. But here, as far as I know, the only change in terms of rollplaying is added damage. Anyway, that's where my doubt came from *shrug*. I find it rather surprising that there's nothing about this in the rules... |
| Steelborn8610-10-04, 09:27 AM | As the rules for iaijutsu are you can strike with two hands, heh you could even use a great club or halberd for an iaijutsu strike. But since you house ruled iaijutsu to be one handed to make it more realistic, just base it off of sword drawing styles, do they usually follow their first strike with a two handed strike, if so then yes, if not then no. |

Well, I just found one situation where this could lead to a change in mechanics: Deflect Arrows DF requires one free hand to work, and if you allow to change 1HF/2HF at will during a round, there would be nothing to stop someone with DF from making a full attack as 2HF, and then switch back to 1HF to still be able to deflect an arrow Not sure if that was planed |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht10-10-04, 10:05 AM | Somewhat off-topic, but IRL you can do an Iajutsu strike with two hands. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, that's the only way you can do it. |
| Welcome10-10-04, 02:45 PM | Fot anyone who may be interested, I asked Customer Service and got the following answer : Yes, that would be possible. It is your choice when you swing exactly how you are swinging. Also, wow, they work on Sundays ! :mymy: You'd never see that in France. :D |

I'm not sure what anyone else has to say about it, but I wouldn't allow someone to do this in my game, for exactly the reason you mentioned...mechanical change. |
| tarkin10-10-04, 04:03 PM | If I recall correctly, I have seen a Sage Response in Dragon Magazine that said switchting a weapon from one hand to two handed or vice versa was a Free Action that could be done only once per round. |

I'd like to retract my previous answer on the grounds that I misread the question. I thought the question concerned making an attack, drawing a second weapon and continuing as a full attack. Oops. |
| Tony Vargas10-10-04, 11:41 PM | I can think of nothing in the rule that would prohibit you from changing grips (or, with Quickdraw, weapons), at any point in a full attack. Nor could I really see any reason to want to disallow it. The only issues I can think of are shield use (if you have a buckler) and TWF. With TWF, obviously, if you don't take the -2 on all your attacks, you don't get the extra attack, so you might have two weapons in hand but not really be TWFing. For bucklers, it might be an issue if a character kept THF'ing durring his action, then letting go with the buckler hand to get an AC benefit between rounds. I'm not sure how abusive that'd be, considering it's pretty easy to just get a shield bonus all the time with Improved Buckler Use (CW), the Shield spell, and Animated Shields. There's even a tradeoff involved since readied attacks and AoOs while he's THF'ing wont face the buckler's AC mod and AoOs he takes while using the buckler would be 1-handed... :shrugs again: |
| sparkster424210-11-04, 12:10 AM | there really arent any too-nasty problems with switching between fighting styles in mid-round, as long as you keep the penalties straight. if you 2HF while wearing a buckler, you take a penalty on attack rolls, and dont get an AC bonus from the buckler. if you remove one hand from your weapon after making your attacks, you get the AC bonus for the rest of the round - but all your attacks of opportunity will be one-handed. switching into 2WF would have to be done before making any attacks, since it applies a penalty to all attacks - but there isnt really any mechanics problem with quick-drawing an offhand weapon, making all your attacks, and dropping the offhand weapon to ready yourself for Deflect Arrows, for instance. oh yeah, one last thing - you cannot normally take even free-actions on someone else's turn, so be sure you like what you are doing at the end of yours - yer stuck with it until its your turn again. :p |
