| Man-Rata01-25-07, 04:52 AM | Can you trip oozes? :) Just noticed, nowhere does it say you can't trip an ooze, which is rather odd. How does an ooze fall, does it make a sound when it does fall :) And can it make a kip up, if it has enough ranks in tumble  |
| Despana01-25-07, 08:36 AM | Can you trip oozes? :) Just noticed, nowhere does it say you can't trip an ooze, which is rather odd. No, you cannot trip oozes. An ooze's body is already entirely on the ground (not to mention being amorphous), so it would be like tripping someone that was already prone. How does an ooze fall, does it make a sound when it does fall :)Well, there's cliffs, trap doors, etc. I'd imagine it makes a sound rather like a "splat," kind of like dropping Jello on the floor. And can it make a kip up, if it has enough ranks in tumble :confused:Oozes are mindless and get no skill points. |
| primemover00301-25-07, 08:44 AM | When in doubt check the Rules of the Game articles. They're a nice tool for DM's and players, though you may want to take some of the advice with a grain of salt. Call them semi official house rules. |
| kadeity01-25-07, 08:44 AM | Remember kids, that swarms and Living spells are Oozes too! |
| Man-Rata01-25-07, 08:59 AM | No, you cannot trip oozes. An ooze's body is already entirely on the ground (not to mention being amorphous), so it would be like tripping someone that was already prone. I know, just thought it was fun :) But nowhere does it say in the rules that an oozes don't have an up and down. Oozes are mindless and get no skill points. You would think so, but no, from the SRD: Ooze Type: An ooze is an amorphous or mutable creature, usually mindless. Features: An ooze has the following features. 10-sided Hit Dice. Base attack bonus equal to 3/4 total Hit Dice (as cleric). No good saving throws. Skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die, if the ooze has an Intelligence score. However, most oozes are mindless and gain no skill points or feats. Traits: An ooze possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry). Mindless: No Intelligence score, and immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects). Blind (but have the blindsight special quality), with immunity to gaze attacks, visual effects, illusions, and other attack forms that rely on sight. Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, polymorph, and stunning. Some oozes have the ability to deal acid damage to objects. In such a case, the amount of damage is equal to 10 + 1/2 ooze’s HD + ooze’s Con modifier per full round of contact. Not subject to critical hits or flanking. Proficient with its natural weapons only. Proficient with no armor. Oozes eat and breathe, but do not sleep. For some reason they get skill points, don't see how they can use them, but they get them. They also made an intelligent ooze in som article, by giving it a template :) But that was a bit of a cheat. Oh, and PS. the thread is just for fun, if someone didn't notice. |

This means there is nothing preventing an ooze to be intelligent, just that such a thing is uncommon. As intelligent creatures, they deserve skillpoints :) |
| ShinAkuma201-25-07, 11:27 AM | For some reason they get skill points, don't see how they can use them, but they get them. You just posted it yourself: Skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die, if the ooze has an Intelligence score. However, most oozes are mindless and gain no skill points or feats. Sure, there are oozes with Int scores, but they're rare. Your average ooze has no skill points or feats. |
| GhostStepper01-25-07, 12:39 PM | Can you trip oozes? :) 1. Go get a packet of jello. 2. Boil some water, mix it up wiht the contents of the packet in a large bowl and refrigerate for a few hours. 3. Dump the contents of the bowl out on the kitchen floor and try to trip it. 4. Let us know how that works out for you. ;) Remember kids, that swarms and Living spells are Oozes too! Actually swarms are....swarms, not oozes. |

I know a few particularly malicious DMs who would probably allow you to trip the ooze, but then rule that it fell on top of you and engulf you. |

Dump the contents of the bowl out on the kitchen floor and try to trip it. 4. Let us know how that works out for you. ;) The sad thing is, I live in Denmark (Well that's not really sad, from my perspective it's actually really great, except it's a bit cold and wet), and we do not have Jello. Not that I've ever seen, you can probably buy it somewhere, but nowhere I've seen. Pudding isn't really the big hit here. I know it's breaking at least half a dozen rules, but it could be fund to make an intelligent ninja/assasin ooze. Hiding in the shadows, droping on peoples heads, and engulfing sneak attacking them. The players would not have seen that one coming. Or a Monk ooze, they're normally very slow, so when a giant ooze outrun the PC's and tumbles past the fighters to make flurry of blows and trip attacks on the wizard, the PC's are probably going to scream and yell :) Can just imagine a tumbling ooze, sorta like a seastar, making cartwheels. :D |
| Beckett01-25-07, 06:23 PM | As a rule, you can not trip something that has no legs, or that is flying, because they are already stabily on the ground or above it and don't need a surface to stand on. I don't know where this rule is, but it is one of the Core 3. |
| Despana01-26-07, 08:12 AM | Actually, if something is using wings to fly you can trip it. Basicaly fouling its wings and causing it to fall. This was in the FAQ. Other than that you are correct. |

| TheCarrionCrawler01-26-07, 12:57 PM | ...They also made an intelligent ooze in som article, by giving it a template :) But that was a bit of a cheat. IIRC, it was a Dungeon magazine adventure. It was an intelligent Gelatinous Cube...it was the leader of a rogue's guild(?). It's name, I think, was Smiling Bob or some other such tom foolery. Its symbol was a square with a dot in the middle. :D |
| jadehawk01-26-07, 01:06 PM | I don't have my books with me, but I am sure somewhere it indicates that oozes cannot be tripped. It might even be in the PHB 3.5 under rules for tripping...When I get home I will look it up and bring up the quote, lest someone beats me to the punch. K, everybody, GO! |
| Someone01-26-07, 01:19 PM | Swarms cannot be tripped (or grappled, or bull rushed). But there's nothing in the ooze's type description that says they can't be tripped. Who knows, maybe a "trip" just signifies disorienting an ooze's sense of "up" enough that it has to stop and reorient itself (a move action that draws an AoO). Sort of like the T-1000 in the second terminator movie- sure, it can transform its back into its front, but its still a "move" to do so. |

| mvincent01-26-07, 02:15 PM | There's nothing in the rules preventing oozes from being tripped...:P If you want to make a claim in dnd, you will have to back it up with proof. :)From the 3.5 FAQ (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/er/20030221a): "Things that don’t need limbs for locomotion can’t be tripped. You can’t trip a snake, a beholder, or a gelatinous cube. You won’t find this in the rules, but then it really doesn’t need to be in there—the rules can leave some things to the DM’s common sense. A creature flying with wings can be “tripped,” in which case the creature stalls (see Tactical Aerial Movement on page 20 of the Dungeon Master’s Guide). You can’t make an incorporeal creature fall down. You also can’t trip a prone creature. Creatures can’t be tripped when they’re swimming (the water holds them up). Likewise, a burrowing creature is driving its body through a fairly solid medium that serves to hold it up." Also, from the Rules of the Game (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20060321a): "Limbless creatures pretty much just lie on the ground (at least while using their normal land speeds or just standing around on a fairly level space) and usually can't be tripped unless they're climbing or in some other precarious situation. This includes creatures with the ooze type, snakes, and anything else that wiggles and slithers. The rules don't give any guidance on creatures whose body types make them immune to trip attacks, so you'll have to rely on your common sense here." |

Actually remember reading that once, but still think the cartwheeling tripping monk ooze would be a fun idea. |
| Salla01-26-07, 02:21 PM | You know, I would let someone trip a gelatinous cube, though it wouldn't do anything. "Congratulations, the gelatinous cube is now on its side ... not that you can actually tell, because it's a freakin' featureless cube." |
| mvincent01-26-07, 04:23 PM | still think the cartwheeling tripping monk ooze would be a fun idea.Check out the Gelatinous Cube Monk here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/eo/20060922a) (it's published on the WotC site, so it's 'official') |

| Whisper_Swiftblade01-26-07, 05:18 PM | tripping an ooze is easy, you just need totrip it the same way you would a bowleing ball. |
| Platstud01-26-07, 06:14 PM | From the Rules of the Game article All About Trip Attacks (Part 2): Limbless creatures pretty much just lie on the ground (at least while using their normal land speeds or just standing around on a fairly level space) and usually can't be tripped unless they're climbing or in some other precarious situation. This includes creatures with the ooze type, snakes, and anything else that wiggles and slithers. |
| runestar01-26-07, 10:07 PM | To mvincent, who so graciously supplied the relevant quotes, See, that wasn't so hard, was it? An argument is only effective if it is supported with the appropriate evidence. Else, it just becomes a fallacy however true it might be. :) |
| mvincent01-26-07, 10:17 PM | An argument is only effective if it is supported with the appropriate evidence. Else, it just becomes a fallacy however true it might be. :)Do you have anything to base that conclusion on? |
| PhaedrusXY01-26-07, 10:24 PM | Do you have anything to base that conclusion on? Do note that the RotG article did say that nothing in the actual rules prevents oozes from being tripped. It is up to DM "Common Sense"... which in my experience isn't always so common. :P |
| mvincent01-26-07, 10:42 PM | the RotG article did say that nothing in the actual rules prevents oozes from being tripped. It is up to DM "Common bSense"Oddly: once parsed, both the FAQ and the RotG appear to conclude that those that needed rules to disallow ooze tripping lacked common sense. Wierd. Did anyone else parse that from the two statements? |
| Someone01-27-07, 01:43 AM | Apparently, I lack common sense. :D I would think you could "trip" just about any single creature. Fish don't swim real well when upside down. A snake on its back doesn't slither real well. And with some effort (i.e. a trip attack), you could leave such creatures upside down or otherwise unable to move properly. Perhaps oozes still have a sense of "up", even though they don't have an inner ear or some such. So that a gelatinous cube on its "side" would have to use a pseudopod to reorient itself, as its only used to moving itself along its "bottom" side. |
| runestar01-27-07, 02:24 AM | Apparently, I lack common sense.:D Don't we all? Seems like it is not as common as its name would suggest...:P |

| Nezkrul01-28-07, 02:00 PM | which way is up on an ooze? aren't they a huge mass of fine sized amorphous creatures? when the ooze "stands up" how can you tell? since they are just a pile of crap on the ground, couldn't you just claim that you are "fighting a prone opponent in melee" for the bonus to hit? :D |

| Dm_Farble01-28-07, 04:41 PM | If you wanna make an ooze go, "Splat" just cast reverse gravity in the area that they are occupying. I guess you could try to trip it while its in the air, reflex dc 25 or so. Then you would have to deal with the acid damage while tripping it. then you might get engulfed and fly upwards with it. Hmm... *thinks of a devious plot to trap party pcs* |
| Dm_Farble01-28-07, 04:51 PM | The way that I see oozes: Oozes are a mass of single celled organisms acting as a whole. Bacterea doesnt need a brain to survive, its sole funtion is to search for food and duplicate. oozes do much the same as the bacterea. They need no brain, and just search for food. When an ooze gets big enough it splits into two, smaller oozes. Swarms are, in a way, very similar to oozes. They are composed of very tiny organisms that act as a whole, searching for food. Since the rulebooks say that swarms cannot be tripped, oozes should not be able to either. Behold, an Ooze! :invasion: Or Behold, A Swarm! :invasion: |
| Nezkrul01-28-07, 05:49 PM | Behold the Swarm and Ooze Killer: :mage: |
