04-11-05, 02:33 PM I'm looking for stats for a cane sword. I have a character that I don't want it to be obvious that he is carrying a weapon, so I would get a cane sword or one hidden in a walkingstick/quarter staff.

Mabye a rapier?

also, wouldn't it be martial? I would think it'd be no different than chaning the sheath to a cane or staff.

Oriental Adventures had something like this. the name of the weapon matched the picture, but the rules and destriptions were setup as if it turned into a spear with a spearhead coming out one end. you could even set it against a charge. Although the picture and name matched the japanese cane swords.

04-11-05, 04:06 PM I'd make it a martial weapon, stats equal to a rapier (or perhaps 1d4 18-20x2, since it's a shorter and thinner blade), with a -2 penalty to Disarm checks (including resisting being disarmed) due to the lack of any sort of effective handguard.

04-12-05, 03:09 AM There's stats for such a weapon in Van Richten's Arsenal for 3rd edition Ravenloft. Basically it's a cane that conceals a rapier and dagger combo (i believe it costs 35 gp).

Archaic Weapon (for D&D, I'd suggest that it's a Martial Weapon, equivalent to a rapier.)
Damage: 1d6
Critical: 18-20 / x2
Type: Piercing
Size: Medium
Weight: 3 lbs.
Purchase DC: 9 (more than $90, less than $120, which according to the exchange rate of 1 gp = $20, would be 5-6 gp. Personally though, I'd price it higher...)

Spot check DC 18 to notice that a cane or umbrella contains a hidden rapier blade (when not drawn.)

04-12-05, 06:29 AM Concealing a sword in a cane, staff or whatever isn't a particularly demanding feat; it really just requires some creative scabbard and hilt design. In D&D terms a basic cane-sword would be simply a Rapier with the cane-scabbard amounting to something like a Light Mace or Club or perhaps smaller, d4 club - small enough for decent TWFing anyway, for what it's worth.

As anyone familiar with the Zato-Ichi movies (and other samurai fiction) knows, bastard-sword sized blades also fit into "canes" readily enough. Heck, I've seen a two-handed estoc (stabbing sword) easily over a meter long disguised as a staff in Livsrustkammaren (the armoury museum of the Swedish royal palace)...

Obviously the scabbards themselves, if dragooned into use as weapons, would get progressively bigger Clubs.

Blade Umbrella- This reinforced bamboo unbrella hides a deadly secret treasured by not only many ninja's of the eastern seas but female assassins from the west who became enthralled with the pictures and stories from far away lands. This umbrella can be used as a simple weapon, (1d8 bludgening, range incriment 10') but to use the blade inside (1d6 (18-20 /x2) slashing) requires profenciy in this exotic weapon. With the blade unsheathed from it's bamboo handle the weapon can be used as two seprate weapons, with the blade being treated as a light weapon and the unbrella as the heavier counterpart. When the umbrella is open it provides a +2 bonus to checks related to falling.
Price 832 gold.

Ryoga's weapon from Ranma 1/2 (even though it's not a hidden blade)

Battle Umbrella - This steel reinforced unbrella gives no clue of it's true weight (85lbs). This rather unwieldy weapon is reserved for only the most strongest of combatants (requireing at least a 17 Str to wield). By spending one exotic profecincy onto this weapon (Exotic weapon profency - Battle Umbrella (Melee) ) allows you to wield it correctly (without the -4 penalty) (1d12 bludg 19-20x2crit) but this special weapon also allows a warrior be specialy trained in it (Exotic Weapon profency - Battle umbrella (ranged)) to give it a 20' range when he opens it up and throws it (1d12 slash 19-20/x2). When the umbrella is open it provides a +4 bonus to checks related to falling.

04-12-05, 04:10 PM Eh, I don't think animé silliness is what was being sought after. If you want a real "stealth" weapon, take one of those Chinese "iron staff" things, paint/laquer it so that its material isn't readily obvious, and be off. Some sort of long staff was pretty much ubiquitous among pedestrians of the period D&D worlds normally cover, and in the hands of someone strong enough to wield them and skilled enough to use them those iron bars are *nasty* (although by D&D terms it'd probably just be a Greatclub...).

Walking canes are a much later feature, but a staff is something most people wouldn't look twice at. And it can conceal anything from a dagger to a spear (removable cover on the tip, nach) or thin two-handed sword, nevermind being a serviceable self-defense weapon by itself...

cost - 12gp
size - large (exotic weapon)

additional stats... with the blade concealed the weapon acts as a quarterstaff weapon (critical x2)
