So I've got 5 flasks of alchemists fire.
I want to keep them handy, ready to throw (in case of emergency, break flask) - so I'm not carrying them in my backpack.

Where the heck does one carry these things? (And other similar "grenades" like holy water, acid, etc.)
In a belt pouch? In a bandolier?

Thoughts, anyone?

I'd keep them on the party rogue. Possibly strapped to their back. That way if they all blow up at once, I'm not going to die. And the rogue probably has evasion...so they'll be okay.

Bandoleers work fine, as long as you don't get too close to your enemy (so he doesn't start to Sunder them).

If your game follows the rules for taking items out of containers, you may find a Heward's Handy Haversack is a good place for them, because anything you want to take out of it is a Move action, and it is an extradimensional space so you don't have much risk of enemies targeting the vials on your person.

A belt of many pockets might work. pretty sure alch fire is light enough to fit in one of those. But yeah...don't keep them on your person where they can be exploded with sunder attempts, or a fireball. 'whoo, half damage against that fireball, I'm alive with...*boom!*' 'he really shouldn't have kept that bandoleer of alchemists fire....'

In a shatter proof container. And not in large quantities:

You carry them on a hireling.

If you are evil, one that does not know what he is carrying.

There is also a potion belt. That should qualify, don't know where it is, but it shortens the time to ready the item. I think there is a masterwork potion belt that makes reading a free action I think?? Sorry but I don't know where it is listed really.

We discovered in a campaign years ago that if someone is carrying a ton of alchemists fire / greek fire, make sure the wizard ALWAYS memorizes pyrotechnics.

Paladin (carrying 5 flasks of greek fire) attempts to pull open a door, not letting the rogue check for traps. Burning oil comes out of a hidden spout above the door right onto the paladin.

Much player screaming and groaning.

The guy playing the wizard tells the DM to check the spell list he gave the DM earlier and casts pyrotechnics using the paladin as the fire source.

Much rejoicing! :D

There is also a potion belt. Wrong size. Potions are 1 ounce each, in tiny vials. Alchemist's fire is 1 pint (16 ounces), in a flask.

Besides, the real problem/illogicalness with alchemist fire is that you are basically carrying around Nitroglycerin. Did you see the Lost episode where they try to carry old dynamite that has sweated the nitro out of the clay that stabilizes it? Nasty stuff nitroglycerin.

Alchemical fire ignites on contact with air, and travels in glass containers designed to break on impact.

So what happens when:

a. You are tripped/fall into a pit trap.

b. somone tries to sunder one of them

c. You fail a balance or climb check

d. You grapple someone

Like I said earlier, best way to carry them is to have a hireling do it for you.
