I've looked through the DMs guide and PHB and I can't seem to find the carrying capacity for a sack or backpack. In the PHB is states that small versions of those items carry 1/3 the amount but never actually gives that amount.

It's all handwaving. Backpacks have a capacity by volume, not by weight. Try picking up a bag of books versus a bag of pillows sometime. The PHB lists weights, not volumes.

Simply apply common sense. If you can stuff all these things into a backpack IRL, you can do so in game. If you can lift the resulting luggage is another matter, but is figured with your character's carrying capacity.

Do they ever mention how much volume they can carry in that case?

It just seems silly to have an item that carries things and not mention how much they carry.

Go to this WoTC page:

WoTC published list of container's capacity is almost at the end of the page (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20040406a)

Merci

Curious that a sack and a backpack has the same carrying capacity.

I guess it's just a sack strapped to your back.
