| runestar04-13-06, 06:45 AM | I was thinking of creating a magazine that creates infinite crossbows bolts, basically the crossbow version of the quiver of elhonna(the one that grants infinite arrows). The idea is to tack this on top of a repeating crossbow - the result is the ability to fire arrows = no.of attacks each round without having to waste precious time reloading, since the catridge will automatically create new bolts to be fired. What are your thoughts? Anything inherently broken about this? What about pricing? |
| tarkin04-13-06, 09:48 AM | Several things. 1) The name is wrong. Elhona is just a bag of holding, it doesn't create things. The one that creates thing is much more expensive. 2) You seem to be thinking that this will ALSO remove the need to use two hands. That is incorrect. It creates the bolts, it does not load them. If you want it to LOAD the bolts, that is additional magic To get this to work, you need a cartridge that creates bolts and also apply the self-reloading property, which was a +2 property from 3.0 This will be so expensive, I don't see it being worthwhile. |
| Seldriss04-13-06, 10:05 AM | The ambiguity about the Quiver of Elhonna was a famous one, in the time of AD&D  Could it be that they didn't fix that in 3rd edition by describing the item in a clear way ? The quiver doesn't create arrows, it merely holds them, in a way similar to a Bag of Holding... |
| Beeblebrox04-13-06, 10:35 AM | The Quiver of Elhonna holds something like 60 arrows (or darts, etc.), 30 javelins (or shortspears, etc.), and 6 bows (or staves, or something else that size). It does NOT create arrows. You must insert arrows, javelins, or bows in order to draw that object out of the Quiver. Now, it's useful because the whole thing weighs only 1 pound. In addition, Elhonna probably wouldn't be the god who would have an infinite crossbow cartridge. Olidimarra migh be a better god for a crossbow cartridge. He's a Rogue, and Rogues often use crossbows. |
| Kamikaze Chicken04-13-06, 11:33 AM | Tarkin: i think the OP is refering to a repeating cross bow, which normally needs to be reloaded every 5 shots or so. He wnats to make an unending r.x-bow clip. This is similar to the warforged component known as an armbow. It is in the ECS in the warforged component section. But i think that making a repeating cross bow clip, of unending bolts makes sense. If it automatically creates a new bolt when ever one is fired, then you never need to reload the clip. I know tarkin is mainly concerned with game balance, but since unending quivers of +1 arrows can be made, a single repeating crossbow clip of unending bolts is not game breaking. A heavy repeating crossbow requires two hands, and a light repeating crossbow require sone to fire. This unn-ending clip would sinply remove the need to change the clip. I dont know what kind of price this would have on it, but from a gameplay standpoint, if your willing to dish out the money, go for it.Especially with the introduction of the "Mind bow" PrC which alows soul knifes to have unending "arrow" attacks. I see nnothing game breaking in this, if the item cost was high enough. I think we should try to stat out this item, so the original poster can benefit from the "wisdom of the masses" these boards are intended to supply. As with any magic item how ever, it is up to the individual dm to allow it or disallow it. Rule 0 is ever pressent. KAMIKAZE! :chicken: |

All repeating crossbows take two hands to load, it is just a free action (until the cartridge runs out.) |
| runestar04-14-06, 08:40 AM | Thanks to all who answered. :) Yeah, I have been mixing up the interpretation of the quiver from day 1. :embarrass It all began when I was reading the drizzt novel about the part where Catti-brie gets that magical bow+quiver, and my friend was there in the background chanting "Quiver of Ehlonna..." for who knows what reason, and before I knew it, I had been brainwashed into thinking that the quiver of ehlonna's property is to produce infinite magical arrows... :( Okay...so the name isn't the most apt, but my question still stands. :D In addition to pricing it, I was wondering if you could help me find a formula to creating said magical cartridge that can produce arrows of varying enhancement properties, from +1 up to +5. :) Thanks again. ;) |
