| Elereth_Berantor09-22-04, 11:11 PM | (I don't know if I should put this in the Spells forum or here, I put it here) Ok, maybe one of you rules lawyers out there can help me out with something. I can create normal magic items just fine--magical aura, caster level, price, all that. But when it comes to intelligent magic items, my calculations for caster level simply don't match up with what's in the DMG. In the DMG, all the example intelligent magic items are minimum CL 15th, even though some of those items are certainly not 15th by my calculation. So I looked around to see if there was some caveat with intelligent items such as "the minimum caster level for intelligent magic items is 15th." Nothing that I can find. Even more confusing is that even though all the items are labeled as CL 15th, two of the items' magical auras are "Moderate" instead of "Strong." Any ideas? I'm just plain baffled. |

INTELLIGENT ITEM CREATION To create an intelligent item, a character must have a caster level of 15th or higher. Time and creation cost are based on the normal item creation rules, with the market price values on Table: Item Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma, and Capabilities treated as additions to time, gp cost, and XP cost. The item’s alignment is the same as its creator’s. Determine other features randomly, following the guidelines in the relevant section. Looks like the minimum level is indeed 15. Other than that, you've got me. |

So I'm going to surmise that the aura applies to what the CL would be if it wasn't an intelligent item. Kinda strange, but oh well. EDIT: My bad, that paragraph is in the DMG, page 288. It's just that it's nowhere near the Intelligent Items section. |

| Mr.Waesel09-24-04, 04:17 AM | Minimum caster level is 15. If the weapon has any enhancements that up the minimum caster level, it becomes higher. So an intelligent +1 sword has a caster level of 15, and an intelligent +1 vorpal sword has a caster level of 20. |
