crayola3 04-16-06, 04:36 AM	A huge air elemental became a whirlwind and drew in my character (I failed the reflex save). Once inside the whirling air elemental, are my ranged touch attack spells automatic? What if you were inside any creature?
dengarbountyhunter 04-22-06, 04:56 PM	WHAAAAAT? I NEVER THOUGHT OF PURPOSEDLY GET IN A CREATURE TO MAKE SURE MY CONTACT ATTACK WORKS! I know this wasn't what you were talking about, but it's just cool... well, if you didn't fail your Concentration check (to cast the spell) or if it was already casted, you probably automatically touch (non-ranged touch attacks too, by the way) because the cyclone is the ONLY thing you could target it with... but the problem is that an elemental in cyclone form might not be eligible for that spell anyway... it is not clear in the MM wether it is STILL the same elemental or if it COMPLETELY becomes a real, small whirlwind...
RaspK FOG 04-22-06, 06:11 PM	Actually, the MM repeats many a time how the whirlwind is just a form the elemental assumes and nothing more, so I believe this would work... The funny thing is that I am not sure how the rules were supposed to work in this case: I can see players gluing themselves to dragons in order to succeed at the casting of their melee/ranged touch attack spells!

Hold Ray + Disintegrate = Get out of belly free card. :schemes: Of course, you'd have to cast the spell before you got swallowed--I imagine it'd be pretty hard to cast a 6th level spell once you're in there. :rolleyes:
draconic_swine 04-23-06, 12:22 AM	I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but this tactic wouldn't work, at least against corporeal creatures: Swallow Whole The Armor Class of the interior of a creature that swallows whole is normally 10 + ½ its natural armor bonus, with no modifiers for size or Dexterity. So no free touch attacks. Easier, yes, but by no means free. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ;)
Invierno 04-23-06, 12:38 AM	it would be almost impossible to "miss" something you were inside of, but you'd still have to hit it hard enough and in the right spot to cause actual damage. so you wouldn't get an automatic hit, but definitely a better shot.
