Casting spells into a grapple? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Had this funky question pop up tonight when the party was fighting an Owlbear.

Okay, here's what it is: do touch spells have the 50/50 chance that weapon attacks do when cast into a grapple. The party fighter got Improved Grabbed after getting smacked pretty hard, so the Cleric tried to zap him with a Cure spell. I ruled that he had the 50% chance of missing (but ended up deciding that if he didn't hit the fighter, he simply lost the spell instead of curing the bear). The rules don't even cover this.

Got any thoughts?

well, technically a cure spell is a touch ATTACK, but beacuse it's benefical the person recieving it isn't trying to avoid it, thus automatically hits. I'd say you'd roll the 50%, and if it came up the owlbear, you'd have to hit his touch AC, and if you missed, you still had the charge. (the owlbear doesn't know what your doing, probally thinks thats as likely to be a cause as a cure) the rules are kinda iffy on that, but if you could choose your target there wouldn't be a 50% change to hit your buddy. This is all purely house though. Now other things, like say the sacred healing feat from CD, would work fine, as it doens't require an attack roll, just for you to consider him to be your ally. (same thing goes for attack spells with no attack roll, such as magic missile)

it works the same whether it is a touch attack or normal attack- melee attacks do not require a miss chance and ranged attacks have a 50/50 chance of hitting your target, unless you also have Improved Precise Shot :)

Let me repeat that:

MELEE ATTACKS DO NOT HAVE A CHANCE OF HITTING ANYONE OTHER THAN YOUR INTENDED TARGET.

This includes weapon attacks, touch attacks, Cure spells, and so on.
