Does anyone know where to find the stats for a Cat o' Nine Tails whip?

No. Can't remember seeing in 3.X Probably because it's not a weapon. It was used to whip a bound person for punishment. Wouldn't want to try it in combat. You'd get killed.

This is D&D mate, a world where logic doesn't usually factor :D (For example: Spiked armor may certainly look more menacing, but it's about as practical as welding barbs to a longsword to increase its damage) :P

I'm actually not planning to use the 'cat for combat, but trying to figure out its effectiveness as a tool for torture / interrogation. Should the damage be 1d4 lethal, or should it actually inflict Constitution damage instead?

Book of erotic fantasy should have it.

It's a sap that does slashing instead of bludgeoning damage.

Bow to me.

Non-lethal slashing damage?

Cool idea. I would never have thought of that.

In ye old Sword and Fist Guide (pg. 75) there is a weapon equivalency table and on it there is a stated equivalent between the "Cat-o'-Nine Tails" and the "Whip Dagger"

Whip Dagger
25gp 1d6 dmg 19-20/x2 15 ft reach (likely no reach for Cat-o'-Nine Tails) and deals slashing damage.

Looking at the stats I don't think this is at all an accurate version of what a cat-o'-nine tails should be, but I too recalled reading it somewhere and am happy I found it.

Closest official thing would probably be the Scourge in Complete Warrior page 157.

Thanks Orbital, the Scourge is exactly what I was looking for.

I think I remember a passage from a captains log (18th century British Frigate) were a man died after a flogging with said item. Maybe 1D4 subdual and 1 point real damage on a crit?

heh. Happened all the time. Flogging could lead to real damage quite easily.

Look up the "knout" for a whip with some real style that way.

Keep in mind that by the rules, after a creature has suffered maximum nonlethal damage (equal to his current hit points), any additional nonlethal damage he takes after that is automatically converted into lethal damage.

So for example, a man with 10 hit points is flogged enough to take 10 points of nonlethal damage. Afterwards, the scourge starts dealing real damage to him.

Another way of looking at it is: "nonlethal" damage can kill you, if you take twice as much of it as the normal amount of lethal damage it would take to kill you.

Like a commoner could be killed by a single stab with a dagger, but he could be killed by two lashes with a whip (though the first lash would just knock him unconscious, and the second lash would finish him off).

the Scourge is synonymous with the Cat O' Nine Tails, both IRL and in D&D.

That is not strictly true, but pretty close.
The Cat could be thought of as a 'version' of the broader catagory that is the Scourge.

A look-up (of both) on wikipedia gives a decent description. I specially like the "expressions" section of the Cat o' Nine Tails.

Edit:
- A Ca9T always had 9 tails (unless it was a cat of some-other-number of tails), and was ropes that were sometimes knotted (for extra pain) but never barbed/hooked/studded or anything like that.
- The CW Scourge is truely a different kind of scourge (than a Co9T), as it is barbed (ouch) and is 'sometimes dipped in poison' (yeesh), and [according to the picture] has 5 tails.

I think the CW scourge has the best stats for a cat-o-nine-tails.

What about the whip? 1d3 nonlethal, slashing.

You could use the Book of Vile Darkness' rules about torture. The cat-o-nine-tails would (approximatly) grant a +5 circumstance bonus on the torturer's Sense Motive check and deal 2d8 damage (damage of weapons is doubled when used as a torture implement, kind of an automatic critical).

using a cat O, nine in combat would be about as useful as using a cheese grater in combat a little silly but a flaming throwing cheese grater now thats a weapon
