| Nephlite06-23-05, 11:10 AM | Has anyone made one? I'm going to be removing paladins from my games, probably permanently, I'd like to have a mount-based warrior to replace it with. I'm gonna work on one myself. . . but yea Doesit have to be mount based? I think you are thinking of knights not mount=warrior. I can post my Cavalier: Why not buy a fighter a mount and get mount feats. Cavalier This class represents the most common picture of the knight: the gentleman warrior who epitomizes honor, courage, and loyalty. He is specialized in battling 'classical' evil monsters such as demons and dragons. Cavalier Alignment: Any Lawful. Hit Die: d10. Class Skills The paladin's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Heal (Wis), Knowledge (nobility and royalty) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Profession (Wis), Ride (Dex), and Sense Motive (Wis). Skill Points at 1st Level: (2 + Int modifier) x4. Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 2 + Int modifier. Table: The Cavalier — Spells per Day — Level Base Attack Bonus Fort Save Ref Save Will Save Special 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 1st +1 +2 +0 +0 Aura of law, detect evil, smite evil 1/day 2nd +2 +3 +0 +0 Divine grace 3rd +3 +3 +1 +1 Aura of courage, Blood-bane 4th +4 +4 +1 +1 Remove Fear 5th +5 +4 +1 +1 Smite evil 2/day 6th +6/+1 +5 +2 +2 7th +7/+2 +5 +2 +2 8th +8/+3 +6 +2 +2 Perfecting body 9th +9/+4 +6 +3 +3 10th +10/+5 +7 +3 +3 Smite evil 3/day 11th +11/+6/+1 +7 +3 +3 12th +12/+7/+2 +8 +4 +4 13th +13/+8/+3 +8 +4 +4 14th +14/+9/+4 +9 +4 +4 Perfect Body 15th +15/+10/+5 +9 +5 +5 smite evil 4/day 16th +16/+11/+6/+1 +10 +5 +5 17th +17/+12/+7/+2 +10 +5 +5 18th +18/+13/+8/+3 +11 +6 +6 19th +19/+14/+9/+4 +11 +6 +6 20th +20/+15/+10/+5 +12 +6 +6 Smite evil 5/day Class Features All of the following are class features of the Cavalier. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Cavalier are proficient with all melee simple and martial weapons + Throwing Axe, with all types of armor (heavy, medium, and light), and with shields (except tower shields). They may not use any ranged weapon except throwing axe or lose powers for 24 hours. Aura of Law (Ex): The power of a paladin's aura of law (see the detect law spell) is equal to her Cavalier level. Detect Evil (Sp): At will, a Cavalier can use detect evil, as the spell. Smite Evil (Su): Once per day, a Cavaliermay attempt to smite evil with one normal melee attack. She adds her Charisma bonus (if any) to her attack roll and deals 1 extra point of damage per paladin level. If the paladin accidentally smites a creature that is not evil, the smite has no effect, but the ability is still used up for that day. At 5th level, and at every five levels thereafter, the Cavalier may smite evil one additional time per day, as indicated on Table: The Cavalier, to a maximum of five times per day at 20th level. Divine Grace (Su): At 2nd level, a pCavalier gains a bonus equal to her Charisma bonus (if any) on all saving throws. Aura of Courage (Su): Beginning at 3rd level, a Cavalier is immune to fear (magical or otherwise) or morale penalties.. Each ally within 10 feet of her gains a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against fear effects. This ability functions while the Cavalieris conscious, but not if she is unconscious or dead. Divine Body (Su): At level 6, Immune to poison (magical or otherwise). Remove Fear (Su): At level 4, Cavalier can remove fear, once /level per day. Blood-bane (Ex): At level 3, Cavalier’s train hard to fight against the blood of their enemies. They gain a bonus +3 to hit and +3 damage against all demonic and draconic creatures. Perfecting body (Ex): Cavaliers train their bodies to withstand acid and fire damage. Upon reaching level 8, they have fire and acid resistance 10. This ability stacks with racial or magical sources that increases resistances. Perfect body (Ex): Cavaliers perfect their bodies to withstand acid and fire damage. Upon reaching level 14, they have fire and acid resistance 20. This ability stacks with racial or magical sources that increases resistances. Code of Conduct: A Cavalier must be of lawful alignment and loses all class abilities if she ever willingly breaks her code. Additionally, a Cavalier’s code requires that she respect legitimate authority and act with honor (not lying, not cheating, not using poison, and so forth). Associates: Cavaliers will never knowingly associate with someone who consistently offends her moral code. A Cavalier may accept only henchmen, followers, or cohorts who are lawful. Ex-Cavaliers A Cavalier who ceases to be lawful or who grossly violates the code of conduct loses all abilities. She may not progress any farther in levels as a Cavalier. She regains her abilities and advancement potential if she atones for her violations (see the atonement spell description), as appropriate. |
| tarkin06-23-05, 11:20 AM | May I ask why you are removing the Paladin? I hope it is not simply because of the historically bad role-playing/DMing related to that class. (Christ, some people think LG = holier-than-thou-a$$h0le. It is no different than any other alignment, unless played too a ridiculous extreme). |
| EvilVegan06-23-05, 12:00 PM | Well. . . I have had bad roleplay experiences as a DM. . . For instance: " Upon arriving at a new town, while searching for something/someone, they came up to a gate with villagers leaving to work the fields. . . ME: Yes you sense that some of the villagers going out to [work the fields] are evil. Pally-PC: I burn the village down. " And no, he wasn't joking. But that's not why I'm removing it. 1. None of my players really like playing them. 2. Of the few players who WOULD play them, they wouldn't play them right, and would disrupt my game. 3. More importantly I'm removing alignment from my game, except for people who want to play exalted/vile characters and for outsiders with alignment subtypes. It is going to be morally relative, as opposed to the typical absolutism found in D&D. I didn't feel like bothering with paladins in such an environment. I mean. . . they would only be able to smite evil outsiders, really evil clerics, black guards, etc. 4. One of my first group AD&D character was a cavalier. :D I still have my unearthed arcana from 2nd edition. |
| Johannixx06-23-05, 01:07 PM | Fighter + tons of mounted combat feats = = Cavalier. |
| rbrt_Spade06-23-05, 01:11 PM | in s&f thier is a calvier p. class |
| EvilVegan06-23-05, 01:36 PM | Fighter + tons of mounted combat feats = = Cavalier. Really? REALLLY?! OMFG!!!!!!! Thanks for the non-help. I'm pretty sure that a fighter + tons of mounted combat feats = fighter with tons of mounted combat feats. You forgot to give him a horse too. A cavalier is similar to a paladin/knight. Mounted. Nobility. etc. I've got one written up. |
| Jaid06-23-05, 01:48 PM | i'm with the mounted fighter idea. the rest of it is just RP. if you can't RP nobility, then no amount of nobility class features are going to help you out with it. oh, i suppose you could make a slight variant and give him a few skills as class skills. like knowledge(nobility), and diplomacy. i would probably remove climb and craft from the fighter skill list to compensate. that's about it. if you really insist on mount progression, then you could certainly trade in some bonus feats for animal companion progression like a ranger. or, you could also just use the handle animal skill provided for you in the first place, and equip your mount with stuff to keep it alive. or you could use the leadership skill to attract a cohort to be your mount. or, you could stop complaining about people's input. no wait, that won't work. you'll just have to complain about everything instead. it's the only solution. :rolleye2: :bored: |
| EvilVegan06-23-05, 01:52 PM | Very "bare-bones". . . You guys know what cavaliers are (I hope). CAVALIER Hit Die: d%. Class Skills The cavalier’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (nobility and royalty) (Int), Profession (Wis), Ride (Dex), and Sense Motive (Wis). Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 2 + Int modifier. Table: The Cavalier Good BAB. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Cavaliers are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, with all types of armor (heavy, medium, and light), and with shields (except tower shields). Mount: As ranger animal companion, mount animals only. [? Something bad needs to happen if it dies, aside from not being able to use most of their abilites. Maybe it takes a week of using a mount to grow accustomed to each other or something? (Still in progress)] Saddle-born: +2 bonus to handle animal checks related to mounts, +2 bonus on ride checks. These bonuses increase by +1 every 3 levels. Courtly Knowledge: +2 to Diplomacy and Knowledge (nobility and royalty) checks. Mounted Combat: Free feat Spirited Charge: Free feat Ride-by Attack: Free feat Mounted Weapon Bonus: Add the listed bonus to attack rolls while mounted. Deadly Charge: x3 damage on mounted charge, x4 with lance, doesn’t stack with spirited charge. Burst of Speed (Su): Once per day +30 enhancement bonus to mount’s speed for 1 round. Full mounted attack: Mount may take a single move action and rider may still make a full attack action with melee weapons. Unstoppable charge: x4 damage on mounted charge, x5 with lance, doesn’t stack with spirited charge. Replaces deadly charge. THE CAVALIER’S MOUNT A cavalier’s mount is different from a normal animal of its kind in many ways. A cavalier’s mount is superior to a normal animal of its kind and has special powers, as described below. Druid/ranger's chart here. . . can't seem to get the formatting right in this piece. Without share spells. Mount Basics: Use the base statistics for a creature of the companion’s kind, but make the following changes. Class Level: The character’s cavalier level. The cavalier’s class levels stack with levels of any other classes that are entitled to a mount for the purpose of determining the companion’s abilities and the alternative lists available to the character. Bonus HD: Extra eight-sided (d8) Hit Dice, each of which gains a Constitution modifier, as normal. Remember that extra Hit Dice improve the mount’s base attack and base save bonuses. A mount’s base attack bonus is the same as that of a cavalier of a level equal to the animal’s HD. A mount has good Fortitude and Reflex saves (treat it as a character whose level equals the animal’s HD). A mount gains additional skill points and feats for bonus HD as normal for advancing a monster’s Hit Dice. Natural Armor Adj.: The number noted here is an improvement to the mount’s existing natural armor bonus. Str/Dex Adj.: Add this value to the mount’s Strength and Dexterity scores. Bonus Tricks: The value given in this column is the total number of “bonus” tricks that the animal knows in addition to any that the cavalier might choose to teach it (see the Handle Animal skill). These bonus tricks don’t require any training time or Handle Animal checks, and they don’t count against the normal limit of tricks known by the animal. The cavalier selects these bonus tricks, and once selected, they can’t be changed. Enhanced Speed: Add the listed bonus to mount’s base speed. Link (Ex): A cavalier can handle her mount as a free action, or push it as a move action, even if she doesn’t have any ranks in the Handle Animal skill. The cavalier gains a +4 circumstance bonus on all wild empathy checks and Handle Animal checks made regarding a mount. Evasion (Ex): If a mount is subjected to an attack that normally allows a Reflex saving throw for half damage, it takes no damage if it makes a successful saving throw. Devotion (Ex): A mount gains a +4 morale bonus on Will saves against enchantment spells and effects. Multiattack: A mount gains Multiattack as a bonus feat if it has three or more natural attacks and does not already have that feat. If it does not have the requisite three or more natural attacks, the mount instead gains a second attack with its primary natural weapon, albeit at a –5 penalty. Improved Evasion (Ex): When subjected to an attack that normally allows a Reflex saving throw for half damage, a mount takes no damage if it makes a successful saving throw and only half damage if the saving throw fails. Ok. . . aside from being an expanded version of the cavalier PrC, I think this does a good job. . . good enough for me anyway. None of that cheesy calling your horse from heaven for a few hours crap. No spells. No charisma abilities. No divine abilities on a non-religious class. Just riding a pimped out horse and stabbing people with much gusto. |
| EvilVegan06-23-05, 01:59 PM | i'm with the mounted fighter idea. the rest of it is just RP. if you can't RP nobility, then no amount of nobility class features are going to help you out with it. or, you could stop complaining about people's input. no wait, that won't work. you'll just have to complain about everything instead. it's the only solution. :rolleye2: :bored: I didn't complain. His wasn't a helpful response. I let him know (in a very snotty manner). Don't complain about my input in response to his input. Oh wait. That won't work, you'll just have to complain about everything instead. Its the only solution.:rolleye2: :bored: But yes, I made an animal companion progression variant and expanded the cavalier PrC. Very good suggestions. And upon reflection I did make it too powerful, it should be the ranger version, not the druid version. Thank you for that suggestion also. I also like the leadership idea. My main problem is with the paladin. I don't want the paladin's mount, I think it is cheesy. The cavalier PrC is based (somewhat) off the paladin class, and his mount is just a continuation of that. Edit: I personally think Paladin should be a PrC off of fighter/cleric or fighter/ranger or ranger/cleric or cavalier/cleric. It has a PrC feel to it anyway. Cavalier should probably be a PrC too, probably off of fighter. Call it squire for 5 levels and there ya go. At 6th level take leadership and get your horse. . . viola a cavalier. Still needs a mount progression unrelated to divine horses. Ranger/druid levels don't make sense, since its a nobility/chivalry based class. So if it isn't possible to get a mount progression unrelated to divinity or nature I should play a core fighter? FANTASTIC SUGGESTION! |
| <<OlD~SChOoL>>06-23-05, 02:13 PM | if you can find it.... waaaayyyy back in the day from 1st edition there was a quite excellent cavalier class.. but a fighter with tons of mounted combat feats HARDLY equals a cavalier.. you are right. just convert the old class where needed to new rules.... simple as that. |
| EvilVegan06-23-05, 02:33 PM | if you can find it.... waaaayyyy back in the day from 1st edition there was a quite excellent cavalier class.. but a fighter with tons of mounted combat feats HARDLY equals a cavalier.. you are right. just convert the old class where needed to new rules.... simple as that. Yea, I've got the book somewhere. . . . . . Here it is. Cavalier. (Paladin is a sub-class of cavalier.) A cavalier or paladin will not wear leather, padded, or studded leather because it is beneath the character's station! Now that's flavor text! They won't use pole arms, missile weapons, or other "lower class" weapons. It has the scaling +'s to hit with lances and swords, plus one with a mace/flail/ or pick. Faster attacks per round progression. Level added to damage with a lance! Combat expertise ability using the mounted combat bonuses. Gets an ability like Quick Mount. 4th level female elves get unicorns. Bonus to speed for 6 rounds. 7th level you get a pegasus. 9th level you get a hippogriff. 11th level you get a griffon. Mounts get bonus hit points. Automatically immune to fear of any sort. They radiated protection from fear in 10' radius. 90% immunity to mind-affecting spells and spell-like abilities (but not the affect of attractive people, it actually says that!). +2 on saves vs illusions. Die hard feat for free (if good aligned). Free food and lodging from other cavaliers and nobility. AND a cavalier was the only class in 1st edition that could increase their ability scores through levelling. Yea, I guess a fighter with a horse is exactly the same. My bad. :D |
| Johannixx06-23-05, 02:40 PM | d12 hit dice seem awfully high. The Barbarian only gets d12s because his AC is forced into mediocrity. This Cavalier is going to be riding around in full plate with a large shield, the pinnacle of high AC. I think d10s would be more appropriate. |

I was just wondering if anyone would notice. Actually its because I use the barbarian class as the template in Word when I start making classes and I forgot to change the hit die. There we go. I fixed it. |
