| Shadow Weaver03-15-05, 09:15 PM | Maybe this is a crackpot idea, but it's finals week and I'm bored. Imagine playing a centaur with a Scout cohort or more likely a Scout with a centaur cohort. The centaur could wear a specialized rear-facing saddle for the Scout to sit in so he or she can shoot enemies to the sides and rear, while the Centaur fights whatever is in front of it. Combine the Centaur's Spring Attack with the effects of the Scout's Skirmish, Mounted Archery, and Improved Many-Shot and it seems like it could be a very effective combo. If anything, I think it'd look funny. |
| Dartak03-15-05, 09:30 PM | In savage species they suggested a smillar thing only with goblins and ogres as mounts (or goblins as slaves depending on how you look at it). edit: oh now that I realize that you said centaur, I would think it would have to be a bipedal creature for this to work, and I believe I read somewhere that centaurs don't like to be ridden |
| JadeSpider964303-15-05, 10:05 PM | a Centaur with a rear-facing halfing on the back.... Awesome! |
| Begle103-15-05, 11:09 PM | Well, it makes more sense than a halfling Rogue with a glaive using the party Cleric as a mount... :banghead: I'd let it fly in my campaign. :) |
| Lord_Anthrax03-16-05, 12:03 AM | That's a good idea, actually. Make for a great mercenary group. |
| Shadow Weaver03-16-05, 01:28 AM | edit: oh now that I realize that you said centaur, I would think it would have to be a bipedal creature for this to work, and I believe I read somewhere that centaurs don't like to be ridden That's why I said the Scout and the Centaur should be cohorts. It's someone the Centaur actually trusts having on its back. |
| Draco Strang03-16-05, 05:55 AM | Yep...I just took this idea. Expect to see it appearing in my campaign next week. |
| Norseman03-16-05, 09:08 AM | Interesting, but why? I could see it being useful if you were fleeing something, but other than that if you have two guys it's best if they focus their fire. A centaur with a longbow and a halfling with a shortbow both pumping out arrows would be a most unpleasant encounter. Although, a medium sized character would be a better choice (bigger shortbow better damage). |
| Shadow Weaver03-16-05, 11:00 AM | Yes, it would be better if they concentrated their fire, but I imagine riding a centaur would be like having another person sitting in front of you. If you try to fire at things in front of your friend swinging a sword, I'd rule that you'd need Precise Shot and possibly have part of the line of sight blocked. Say the centaur charges past one line of troops to get at a higher ranking or more important NPC, someone has to cover his back when others come to the aid of the NPC. That, and it's funny. |
| Ziatyn Phoenixwolf03-16-05, 12:44 PM | Centaurs do indeed dispise being thought of as mounts for any reason. Even friends of a Centaur are not going to be given any slack on this subject. Halfling in a back back of a Half-Oger. The Halfling is a cleric named Master, and the Half-Oger is a barbarian named Blaster. Tada! Master Blaster from Thunderdome. |
| mvincent03-16-05, 01:29 PM | Well, it makes more sense than a halfling Rogue with a glaive using the party Cleric as a mount... That is strange... why didn't he use a lance? |
| Shadow Weaver03-16-05, 02:30 PM | The fact that centaurs don't like being ridden is another thing that makes this combo more noteworthy. It's unusual and unexpected! |
