A Mounted Knight can use a lance one handed, but for obvious reasons, no rule allows a centaur to do that.

From what I can gather, thoguh, a centaur can wield a medium lance one handed at a -2 penalty, and use it as mounted knight would...

Is this right or am I missing something?

And is there any simple way to let my centaur fight with a lance and shield like a mounted knight would?

Actually, no rule prohibits them from doing so either.

They can wield large lances, and charge with it, gaining all the benefits as though they are mounted. As per races of faerun, they are also allowed to take the spirited charge feat without meeting the prereqs and apply it to their melee attacks.

But a Large Lance is a two-handed weapon for a large creature. They don't have an ability that says they can use a lance as though mounted. They have rules that allow them to do double damage with a lance on a charge. THat's it.

I agree. Honestly, the stuff Centaurs already get that lets them 'count as mounted' is silly and illogical.

The reason you do more damage on a charge with a lance is becaue you are using the momemntum of your mount.

Effectively you are using the mucles of your horse to push the weapon.

The centaur uses their own momemntum, which is no different with the lance than with any other weapon.

It is a silly idea.

For the level adjustment and hitdie you have to pay i don't see any huge issues in this. I mean, if you wanted to take levels in Cavalier and REALLY do some damage while mounted it is gonna take you quite a while to get there, way more time and leveling than your bog-standard human

Yeah, I'd have to agree that there is no ruling that would allow the centaur to use a lance one handed. Part of the reason that a mounted character can do so is, as Tarkin pointed out, the momentum, but the other part, which is glossed over in the rules (i.e. not even looked at) is that saddles and the various accoutrements that go along with them help greatly in weight and mass distribution, to the point that a jousters saddle actually has a cradle built into it to assist in the holding of the lance.

I disagree. Momentum is momentum, regardless of where it comes from. You would do more damage with a lance than any other weapon on a charge as the lance would be designed to be more lethal in a charge. If your bottom half resembles a mount in terms of charging momentum, I do not see why your lance charge would not benefit similarly.

I don't get the distinction between using your horse to propel your lance or yourself. But I guess that is moot as humans cannot charge like a horse anyways.

And besides, what is to stop the centaur from charging with the lance 2-handed? Since you only get 1 attack, it makes sense to wield it 2-handed so you benefit from extra str damage and improved power attack ratio.

I have always resolved Centaurs as counting as mounted. As someone said above, you take a huge hit in LA and monster HD, and this just about balances it out (keep in mind I consider just about all LA's overcosted). You don't need a horse because you have one built in. If someone Sovereign Glues you to your horse do you suddenly no longer count as mounted simply because you can't get off the horse? No.

As have I, becasue the other solution just feels WRONG.

Consider this: Let's say someone wants to play a centaur lancer under the other rules. Let's say he has a human friend, also a lancer. His human friend gets on a horse and looks very much like our centaur buddy, only the human is doing about five times as much damage per charge... because his horse isn't glued on. Which leaves our centaur in the unfortunate position of having to find something BIGGER THAN HIMSELF on which he can ride(!) in order to keep up. Like what, a purple worm? Good luck stabling that.

"Some" jousting armors had cradles, I do not think that I have ever read anything about the saddle itself having one. A saddle discribed in the dragonlance setting was designed with one but that was for dragon mounted lances. Which would not apply to a centaur.

I would let the centaur recieve all benefits of having a lance, but that is just me.
