| Master_Vega11-11-07, 10:21 PM | I'm sure there are rules for this somewhere, but I haven't been able to find them. I'm currently playing a Barbarian/Swashbuckler with a spiked chain; I'm also proficient in longblades* so I thought it'd be cool to, at some point, get my masterwork spiked chain attached to the hilt of a greatsword or perhaps something I can use weapon finesse (and therefore Insightful Strike) with. Would this work as a double weapon, or would it simply allow me to use one weapon or the other without having to take an action to switch weapons? *My group is using the variant weapon rules in Unearthed Arcana (or at least I thought it was UA.) |
| elgrabadula11-11-07, 11:13 PM | i guess it would be considered a double wepon you would do with a greatsword , 2d6/2d4 |
| RavenDrake11-12-07, 12:08 AM | The Spiked chain is a two-handed weapon, and thus is too powerful to be made into a double weapon(prestige classes notwithstanding)... However, there are a couple of existing blade and chain weapons (the Gyrspike and the Lynxpaw) that feature a one-handed sword with an attached chain weapon. The Lynxpaw(Races of the Wild) even allows you to use weapon finesse with both ends, so that might be something you'd want to look into. If you're using the Weapons Group Proficiency from UA(I assume) and you have proficiency, then taking Weapon Group (Exotic Double Weapons) should let you use the Lynxpaw or Gyrspike(though I think you need to be proficient with similar weapons for either end to take it, so Heavy Blades and Flails and Chains for those two) |
| elgrabadula11-12-07, 12:23 AM | well what if it was a small Mwk chain |
| Rulebook11-12-07, 01:33 PM | lynxpaw is your best choice. you're not going to have a weapon made out of two exotic weapons AND have reach. *shakes magic 8ball* Seek Cheese Elsewhere |
| SirGeshko11-12-07, 02:40 PM | I'm surprised no one's mentioned http://www.geocities.com/sirgeshko/swordchucks.jpg (http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=010815) |
| smeagol_lied11-12-07, 02:48 PM | Maybe with a longsword and a light flail. Or 3.0 monkey grip. |
| Master_Vega11-12-07, 02:54 PM | o_O I suppose I need to explain how I intend to use the chain/sword before anyone gets anymore silly images of a barbarian swinging a sword on a chain: I plan to use the combo similarly to how a Kama and Chain are used. Step one: chuck chain at target and hopefully entangle/trip it. Step two: stab/slash it with sword/kama. |

| Master_Vega11-12-07, 03:08 PM | Use bolas? Ah, but I already have the Exotic proficiency feat for a spiked chain. :P I don't mean to actually chuck the chain; I mean to make a reach-trip with it. |
| Rulebook11-12-07, 03:18 PM | ah, so you want to trip then hit with the sword side? very much like the lynxpaw? or are you just unwilling to give up the higher damage dice? |
| Master_Vega11-12-07, 03:30 PM | Yes, I want to trip opponents, then stab/slash them with the sword end. I'd use a lynxpaw, but then I'd be wasting a feat... that and I'm pretty sure I won't be able to use a lynxpaw as my GM is very stingy about racial weapons in this campaign. I don't think he'll have a problem with combining two local weapons so long as I can come up with some logical rules for it, though. |
| BugHunter11-12-07, 09:30 PM | The lynxpaw is not a racial weapon see page 165 of Races of the Wild. |
| Kouk11-13-07, 03:46 AM | No matter what, sticking two different weapons together is going to end up as an Exotic Weapon. If you want a Spiked Chain that can do some slashing damage though, there is the Drow Scorpion Chain in Races of Eberron, which is a 1d6, 19-20/x2 spiked chain that does slashing damage and uses the normal Spiked Chain proficiency. You could also ask to re-train to a different exotic weapon. If you would be allowed to create a custom weapon, how is that very different from a published weapon that performs similarly? |
| risner11-13-07, 04:15 AM | get my masterwork spiked chain attached to the hilt of a greatsword Would this work as a double weapon, or would it simply allow me to use one weapon or the other without having to take an action to switch weapons? You want to what? No, it wouldn't work as a double weapon and it wouldn't allow you to use one or the other. You would need to design a new weapon, but adding anything to spiked chain would be a no go ethically and rules wise since spiked chain is already significantly better than any other exotic weapon. |
| curtis_ownby11-13-07, 09:06 PM | Whip-dagger and sword(bastard sword) sounds like what you want. If you are using UA you will not need to change your character even. You will need the Two Weapon Fighting feat, but that is just one feat. I would also sugest combat relexes to take advatage of the extra attacks of oppertunety. |
