Chainsword? [Archive] - Wizards Community

A couple of us in the group have recently been reading warhammer 40k books and my fighter desperately wants a chainsword. They're on the way to a reclusive magesmith that may be able to accomplish the deed. I thought that the best way to do this would be to enchant it with blade barrier which makes it rather expensive. My player came up with an alternate way by having the sword forged with the chain on it and then casting animate on it. It would be much cheaper and easier to create but the technology to forge the chainsword is to say the least incredibly difficult to create. How much damage should the created weapon do and how much does it cost at the lowest caster level possible, how long and xp cost. I'm kind of confused by the books and this is my first attempt to create a magic weapon.

Thanks in advance!:D

Let me get this straight... your Fighter wants to have a Sword. On a Chain.

Sword-chucks, anyone.

No.

What he wants looks a lot more like a gasoline powered Chainsaw.
You know, the kind of thing used to cut down a tree.

1. Do not exactly copy a spell. That is what potions scrolls, wands, and staves are for. They are never great.

2. Do not worry about the how's, why's, wherefore's, etc.

Describe the end result.
Give it reasonable power limitations
Price it based on those limitations
then pick some spells that are reasonably close to it as pre-reqs.

Here is my attempt at a fair chainsword type item:

Chain Sword.

This rare, powerfull, +1 Keen Vorpal long sword has small moving razor sharp blades traveling on it's edge.

In addition to the normal effects of being a +1, Keen, Vorpal weapon, it does triple damage on a confirmed critical.

Lastly, when used against plants and undead creatures, it does an additional 1d6 points of damage on any hit.

Would be a whip/sword.
I don't know any images for a chainsaw sword.

Believe it or not, the d20 system actually has a Chainsword. It's in d20 Modern's Future Tech. I think it's statted out as 2d8, 19-20/x2, but don't quote me. Also, since it's battery powered it's kinda pricy to keep "running."

If its an ivy sword whip just use the spiked chain stats and have it do slashing damage. If its a chainsaw, use the d20 modern chainsaw stats.

No, no, no. It's not a whipsword, and it's not a sword on a chain. It's a chainsaw sword.

google warhammer 40k Dawn of war intro there’s a great image of an orc getting gutted with one.

Its a bastard sword, two sided blade, one is normal the other is a chainsaw. made so if the chain gets jammed you still have a great weapon.

i'd say the chainsaw side does 1d8 while not running or idling and when running i'd say 2d8- with some bleeding affect, i cant remember if there is one or not. so like 2d8 and causes bleeding damage for 1d4 rounds dealing 1d6 per. I would make it so it can only run 1d4 hours a day, split-up up to 3 time periods. a crit range like a bastard sword, and has a 50% chance to jam when you deal more then 14 points from the sword (15-16 weapon total)
and keen + mighty cleaving chain side only

so masterwork bastard sword +2 or better, with animate on the chain, and some other spell to ceep it running and usable in a antimagic environment.

so I would price it about lol 40k - 60k

Oh, okay. A Chainsaw.

Then what Lint Trap said. It's already statted out.

With Animate Objects The "Tech" to create the Sword is simple linked chain with an outward facing blade In a groved Track. The handle simply has space for the chain to pass through reaching around it too connect too the "blade" that has the tracked grove.

One fabricate spell and it is done but for the enchanting.

These are better depictions IMHO. And involve lots of cheesy heroic posing right out of Soviet and PRC propaganda paintings, as is only entirely appropriate in the context. :P

Malhavoc Press' Chaositech has one. It's a bastard sword that does 3d6 damage when the blades are running. I believe it takes a move action to get it started.

Just be careful for those mutations... :)

acturally,I think he is thinking of the chainsword that was in encyclopedia magica.

Doesn't mesh with the quite specific reference to WH40K in the OP.

Just make it naturally a fleshgrinding weapon that you have to keep hold of to have it "grind" (with no 5-round duration limit), rather than letting it do the work by itself. That should do it. Heck, it doesn't even have to have an enhancement bonus to begin with.

Wow! This really took off I wasn't expecting so many responses. Thanks for all the help so far I'll have to decide on which variant to use. Heck I could just use all of them!:D

I loved that chainsword in the encyclopedia magica, it was one of the reasons I bought the 4 wizard spell compendiums back in 2nd edition. The weapon worked off of a spell called Motion (the chainsword was really useful against treants) and that was around the time we learned about Gundams.... Soon after giant clockwork suits of armor ran rampant through Faerun. :)

You probably want an eviscerator: the two-handed, weapon-bigger-than-yourself greatsword of chain weapons.

The magical equivalent would be the vicious property, only without the feedback damage (so it would probably be a +3 enhancement). The moving teeth (and "brrrraaaaaaa!!!!" sound) part would just be descriptive.

At some point I plan to DM a quasi-future/fantasy game. Sophisitiacted, "lost" technology, wizards with genetic control of power sources... imagine king arthur, but with a chainsword instead. Groovy.
Basically scifantasy.

Urban arcana has a lot of Techno-magic items that could be dropped into a game. You might also consider D20 Past which helps you to incorporate items. The srd has a D20 modern version that will help with the conversion?
