What is the best magical weapon to be created?

The rules:

1) If it would be better in the hands of one race or class than another, state such.
2) Cost cannot exceed 100,000 gold.
3) It must be weildable by a medium-sized creature.
4) Melee and Ranged weapons will be concidered seperately.

Here we go. ready?
Mercurial Greatsword, +1 Flaming burst Shocking Burst Freezing Burst
Reason why It is so cool: It's base damage is 2d6+1+(1d6 Fire)(+1d6 Electric)(+1d6 Frost). But, on a critical it deals 8d6++4+(3d10+1d6 Fire)(+3d10+1d6 Electric)+ (3d10+1d6 Cold).
Making Avarage Damage 18.5
And Avarage Critical Damage an INSANE 92.
And that's BASE damage.
Whoo yeah.
Cost: 92,000

Going a different direction than raw damage, I'm more about style and flavor. Best doesn't mean most powerful ;)

Grace, the Requiem
Backstory: In the twilight of the first epoch of the word, there existed a powerful cabal of martially trained mages whose name is lost to time. Thier leader was expected to be strong in will as well as magic and sword -- and should he falter, it was the cabal's wish that he would die.

Stats: Grace, the Requiem
+2 Keen, Merciful, Vicious Scythe (72,000gp)

Grace is intellegent (Int12 Wis12 Cha 10) (Ego 12)
Lesser Power: Deathwatch Continual (1,000gp)

Grace also has a special purpose: To bring her wielder to negative hp via her Viscious ability. To do this, she constantly urges her wielder to attack without the merciful abilty active.

Damage output:

normal: 2d4 + 1d6 (merciful) + 2d6 (vicious) +2 Average = 15(subdual)
on crit (19-20): 60 (subdual)

Final price: 51,318gp

Not The most powerful, and certainly not the most versatile, weapon, but here goes anyway.

The Holy Revenger

Holy, Axiomatic, Vicious, Sacred +1 Greatsword of Evil Outsider/Chaotic Outsider Bane; Usable only by Lawful Good Paladins(-40% Price).

97,200 gold

13d6+5 versus Demons
9d6+3 versus Devils
8d6+1 or 10d6+1 versus Undead
Vaalingrade Ashland

Sacred?

I don't know whare that's from, but I'm guessing it does +4d6 - +6d6 damage to Undead?

2d6 from the sword
2d6 from Viscious

Holy will only effect Undead with an Evil Alignment
Axiomatic will only effect undead with a Chaotic Alignment
Undead aren't normally outsiders...

So far we're only up to 4d6 - 6d6

Plus, you only get a 30% reduction for the 'security feature' of class restriction. Assuming Sacred is +2 bonus, you're over price, dude.

Demon Reaver, Iizaknal 96,320

A weapon forged in Dis, this blade was given to general Iizaknal as a sidearm as he charged valiantly into the demoic hordes. Although he died a most horrable death, his blade accepted his soul into it's glorious form. The blade has managed to find its way into Prime, waiting to once again be caked in demonic ichor.

+1 Axiomatic Keen Chaosbane Evilbane Adamant Greataxe. Intellegent (Iizaknal the Pit Fiend still lives within it). LE, Int 17, Wis 10,Cha 17. 120 ft darkvision and hearing. Speech and telepathy. Know: Planes 10 ranks, Sense Motive 10 ranks. Magic Circle Against Chaos at will.

100,000? boring

Vicious, screaming, corrosive, flaming, icy, shocking, +1 fullblade.

Cost: 98,000
Damage: 2d8+1 +7d6
Average damage: 30

*must have exotic weapon proficiency: fullblade & monkey grip*

Also note you'll never, ever have this combination unless you are a kensai or whatever; in which case you can take the sword up to +4 at level 10 in the prestige class. On the other hand the Kensai can't pick the fullblade so you might have to make due with a greatsword or whatever it allows.

The name you ask? The sword least likely to ever appear in a campaign.

Why wouldnt it not appear? Because giving a weapon like that to a fighter would utterly break a wizard. Keep in mind that fighter could use the sword up to 4 times per round, while the wizard only has so many spells per day. If I was giving that to a melee pc, your jaw would drop at what the wizard would get. Why would I not hand it out? because it reeks of munchkin-ness.

Vicious , corrosive and screaming were balanced so well they didnt need an update ;). No seriously, whats the difference 1d6 fire or 1d6 acid? There are creatures immune to both. I agree screaming is a bit on the munchkin side because very few creatures have that resistance, but otherwise what's the problem? Vicious deals 1d6 damage to you, so that is it's drawback to adding an extra 1d6.

If the fullblade part gives you problems (as it has apparently given many people problems, since they totally screwed up on making the wording clear) just consider it a merecutial greatsword.

I'm familiar with curse spewing, where does greater appear? Also where do the stalactite and tentacle modifiers come from & what is their effect? I assume that the weapon is called strongheart; if so what's that?

+2 bastard sword (my favorite) bane (undead), holy, keen, spell storing.
its for a paladin put cure serious wounds in it and attack undead.
3d8+15, 2d6 holy, 2d6 bane, acts as a +4 bastard sword against undead
on a max critical hit (17-20 x2) it does 87 plus 2x strength mod(both hands). 98,335

if you think that allowing a fighter to do 30 avg damage with his weapon on a single attack is broken... then i would HATE to play a fighter in your game.

take a look at what a wizard's spells can do, then you tell me is 30 is too high.

most of the damage is additional dice that wouldnt get multiplied on a crit, and except for the sonic, and acid damage, just about everything is immune to at higher levels.

Mordenkainen's Revenger
(Dagger of Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound)
Upon a successful touch attack, this +3 dagger causes an invisible dog-like force to come into being, attacking the target for 9 rounds. (This item might be only usable by the appropriate class, not sure on this)
Dog Stats
Attack: +10
Damage:2d6+3 Piercing
Crit: 20 (x2)
Moderate Conjuration; CL13 Craft Rod, Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound Cost 99,300gp

Use Activated (2000), 9th (CL) x 5th (SL)
+9300 for +3 masterwork dagger

I wouldnt allow this item in my campaign (or many other use-activated unlimited use-per-day items). Still, you can figure this item's cost by the chart and so I figure its legal. Also, you could substitute in any 5th level spell, such as Slay Living (Fort Save DC 19ish) if you wished, but I prefer the hounds. Actually, its much nicer when it summons a Mordenkainen's Sword on a hit, but that one costs 185000gp :D

Vicious is in the DMG now.

Corrosive is now Acidic and is in DMGII

Screaming may be gone though. And if it is, its because WotC has a history of inability to conceptualize sonic energy.

You want an example of what REAL munchkinism is? *cracks knuckles* Here's what you do to really **** your DM off:

Take the following feats:
Monkey Grip
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Mercurial Greatsword & Platinum weapons)
Imp. Crit.
Imp. Natural Weapon (Grafted Platinum Mercurial Greatsword)

Now get the following items:
Fanged Ring if the DM allows items from Dragon Magazine - not necessary, but it helps.
Item of Enlarge Person or expand, constantly on.
Item of Divine Sacrifice, constantly on.
Item of Vampiric Blade, 1/day
Cost of misc. items: 64000

Now, for the actual weapon, get the following:
Mercurial Greatsword forged from Platinum
Enchanted as +1, Vicious
Grafted onto your arm (now counts as a natural weapon)
Made for a person who's large.
Weapon cost: 17500
(7000 for the platinum, 1200 for the size and base weapon, 300 MW cost, 8000 for Enchantments, 1000 to have it grafted)

First attack every round, with all buffs on:
12d8(base)+2d6(Vicious)+5d6(Sacrifice)+2 +Strength bonus, etc.

Assuming a str of 20 (to be able to even carry the huge thing):
Min. Damage: 25
Max, with crit, single hit: (145)*4 = 580
And as a perk, you heal half the amount of damage you do for 5 rounds, thanks to Vampiric Blade.

Of course, this is making a LOT of assumptions about your DMs generosity. Some of the rulings needed:
* Is the fanged ring allowed?
* Are you allowed to have a weapon grafted onto you as described in Fiend Folio?
* Is it worth it to spend the extra item slots?
* Can you have a psionic item?
* Can you find people to make all these enchantments?
* Can you afford the feats?
* What size modifiers stack? Ie, a large creature does more damage. A larger weapon does more damage. Does a large creature with an even larger weapon do damage two steps higher?
* Can you make mercurial weapons of out a material other than the regular one (steel)?
* Can you play as a Goliath and use weapons even larger?
* Can you play as a Wu Jen and grow Colossal instead of using Enlarge Person?

Well, you get the idea. I'm just demonstrating that the 30 damage per hit average wasn't really munchkinism at all like someone said. THIS is munchkinism. Only an insane DM would even consider allowing an atrocity like this, but there are worse builds out there.

And anyone who says that either of the questions above are answered in the source material is lying. None of these loopholes are covered in the text. It's just begging to be houseruled though.

Sources:
Mercurial Greatsword (Sword and Fist)
Platinum Weapons (Magic of Faerun)
Grafting weapons (Fiend folio)
Monkey Grip (Complete Warrior)
Fanged Ring (Dragon Magazine 308)
Improved Natural Weapon (Monster Manuals)
Divine Sacrifice (Complete Divine)
Enlarge Person (PHB)
Wu Jen (Complete Arcane)

I'm taking a different approach. Instead of raw damage, i'm going for versatility.

Note: These apply to any weapons. It's not the weapon you use, it's what you put on it!

-+1 Ghost Touch, Keen, Merciful, Mighty Cleaving, Wounding Falchion.

For Pure Damage in any situation:

-+1 Keen, Mighty Cleaving, Speed, Thundering Falchion.

The falchion has a high crit range, so Keen works VERY well with it. Combine that with an ability that does extra damage on crits... and you have a reliable weapon that will crit many times. Mighty cleaving gets the extra attack on the cleave, and speed gets the extra attack any time. It'll be weak against the incoporial, but it won't rely on elements that can be stopped by element strong creatures.

08-11-05, 04:12 PM
My own best weapon would be thus:

Sword of Subtley (+4 to Sneak Attack to-hit and damage).

Enchanted with Brilliant Energy, allowing it to pass through armor to the fragile defenses of the skin beneath.

Enchanted with Blurstrike (Races of the Wild), allowing it to bypass even the most nimble fighters (ignores Dexterity).

Enchanted with Ghosttouch, allowing it to attack all creatures, regardless of what plane they're on.

Assuming it were used by a 9th level Rogue, with the feat Weapon Finesse, and 18 Dexterity (starting with 16, with a point put into it at 4th & 8th levels) he would be able to do 4d6+4 with a successful Sneak Attack. With the high Dex (and the feat), he would have +4 to hit.

He would be able to Sneak Attack every attack, doing a maximum of 68 points of damage (1d6 dam., 4d6 Sneak Attack, +4 subtle dam., x2 critical). Good, but not great, but also that is not taking into account any Strength modifiers. And the ability to hit ANYONE is nothing to scoff at. :)

Vicisious was redone in 3.5 It is legal
Screaming and acid were NOT redone in 3.0 and that was done on purpose. Screaming is blatnatly abusive and acidic has logical problems related to dripping acid everywhere.

If we are core only, you can't enchant specific weapons further.

And why do so many of you go just for the extra damage? Better to HIT someone, you can always power attack away excess bonuses to hit.

I won't even talk about the illegalness of spell storing arrows.

If you are going to list those kinds of things, then I am changing my bow to

A Sword of True Strike always on, Cost 2,000 gp

It is just as fair as screaming weapons or spell storing arrows.

Well said! And of course, I agree. And Shade's weapon emphasized versatility - and my personal opinion, that's where its at. Being able to hit anything, and with as little room for failure as possible, is a better weapon to keep on hand. ...and THEN worry about damage.

I'm going with OGL core only. Just so you know:

Melee

"Friend Blade"

Mythril Ghostouched Keen Tsurugi of Spell Storing and Magecraft

History

This blade was left in payment by the great sorcerer and wu shu master Seven Dancing Tigers at the shrine where he was raised and trained. He bestowed the sword upon his prior master, a wizard who apprenticed him in the arcane arts. While he claimed he had given the sword as payment, the truth was that his combat skills had surpassed reliance on weapons. The adged master now weilds the sword with the virgor of a young tiger on the hunt. His mytical lore, potent sword, and tai chi mastery have made him a deadly fighter and famous healer. In his youth he was known as Autumn Dew, but he is now known only as He of the Tiger's Sword. He and his blade where last seen in fudal Japan, where they disappeared into a time space rift.

Ideal Weilder

A Monk / Wizard with a monk weapon fighting style feat that allows greatsword. (I've seen several feats of this type. They are all non core. I don't know if greatsword is allowed or what the feat is called if it is, but whatever.)

Ranged

"Arrow Thrower with the Quickness" -- Rough (i.e. Short) Translation of The Original Gnomish

Adamantine Keen Seeking Heavy Reapeating Crossbow of Speed and Dexterity

History

This crossbow was created by a Gnomish Artificer for a Dwarf Lord whom she'd lost a bet to. The original bet was her bow against his finest weapon. However, the bearded one negotiated her into providing a matching one sized for him. She agreed, thinking she couldn't loose. Unfortunatly for her, out of the several games possible for resolveing the bet, the random selection was Anvil Cracking, a sport in which Gnomes have never been able to best Dwarves at. As the bet had been agreed to in place of a duel to the death, she didn't protest. (During the competion, she even set a new record for the Gnomish Female class.) It did, however, take her a very long time to craft the weapon. In the end, it surpassed even her own bow, which had previously been her finest work. The Dwarf Lord was so pleased, he gave her his weapon as a gift and gesture of future friendship.

Ideal Weilder

This weapon is good for just about anybody. It helps to have a good ranged attack and not already be boosting your Dexterity. The appropriate Knowlege skills to know wich bolts you want the clip to be feeding you is also important to getting the best use out of the gold spent.

Crossbow ~ 84,000 gp

Heavy Repeating Crossbow ~ 400 gp

Dexterity [+2] ~ 4000 x 2 (slotless) ~ 8000 gp

Ammunition ~ 16,000 gp

Efficent Crossbow Clip ~ 1800 gp (Or less, as it hold no bows or javelins. It's a repackaged Efficent Quiver and not quite core.)

Ten Alchemical Silver Shapechanger Bane Bolts [+1] ~ [+2] ~ 1680 gp
Ten Steel Ghostouch Undead Bane Bolts [+1] ~ [+3] ~ 3670 gp

The brute force approach, following Tarkin's suggestion:

+5 greatsword 50000 gp
Belt of Giant Strength +4 16000 gp
Boots of Speed 12000 gp
Potion of Good Hope 1050 gp
= 79050

Power attack for -10
Average damage: 7 (base) + 5 (enhancment) +2 (morale) + 3 (strength) + 20 (PA) = 37
(and you get an extra attack too!)
Durath

08-12-05, 09:20 PM
Pardon me... but how is a Belt of Giant Strength even remotely related to designing the best magic sword?
I know what it does, I know why melee players always want the +6 version.

Corrosive weapons have logistic problems with dripping acid? that's got to be the weakest excuse I've ever heard. Have you seen aliens? all that acid dripping everywhere really makes for a memorable scene.

As for screaming being broken I can see both sides. A roaring cacophony of sound every time you swing has its drawbacks.... especially with my group. They're almost always trying to gank someone silently. That means they can't use the weapon all the time. As for sonic being broken as a damage type, the world has a ton less resistances to sonic than fire/ice. I have zero problem with a corrosive weapon, but I would give lots of thought to a sonic weapon. In fact I might only allow screaming on a wepaon for a rogue, or someone who never wants to be caught killing. Instead of being limited by resistances it would be limited by the noise you make.

The books are only a guide. If I allow something it will be balanced according to the rest of the game. Limitations on imagination are usually a step in the wrong direction unless you play with munchkins.

Here's a nearly legal entry based on these stats:

+5 greatsword 50000 gp
Sword of Giant Strength +4 16000 gp x2 (slotless) = 32000
Sword of Speed Weilder 12000 gp x2 (slotless) = 24000 (uber munchkin)
Sword of Good Hope 1050 gp x1.5 (unusual slot) = 1575 per charge

Total = 106000 (zero charges) + 1575 per charge

All you need is to find some cost reductions ...
