| bfiggins03-27-08, 02:35 PM | I have a character who wants to buy two magic items: A Minor Cloak of Displacement (DMG) and a Mantle of Second Chances (DMG2). The problem, of course, is that these are both the Shoulders slot. What do you think I could do to change these item slots, without necessarily taking the x1.5 cost for an item in an unusual slot? The character has her Throat and Body slots taken up, but most everything else is okay. What do you think of a Ring of Displacement? Headband of Second Chances? Boots of Displacement? Any other ideas? |

Its always more fun for the DM that way. Give them an item and make them choose which they want to use more and what they are going to have to part with. |

| bfiggins03-27-08, 04:29 PM | What do you think of the examples I gave, though? A Ring of Displacement, Boots of Displacement, a Vest of Second Chances, a Headband of Second Chances. We're still at the stage where we've got some open slots to fill. |

The rules as written only cover common enhancements; Displacement and Resurgence aren't on that list. Thanks for reminding me of that, though. |

Well one of the examples is adding the effects of springing and striding to slippers of spider climb, and the two examples they give on costing upgrades are adding feather fall to a ring of jumping and adding ring of forceshield to a ring of jumping, so I definitely think the rules would cover this. Now the formula they give for determing price makes me think it might not be any cheaper than just reslotting the effect, but it would leave you with those other slots open at least. |
| bfiggins03-27-08, 04:51 PM | I see the passage you're referring to. Hmm, it'd be an extra 3000 GP (half the cost of the Mantle of Second Chances), but it'd save a body slot. |
| RavenDrake03-27-08, 05:03 PM | I'm willing to work with my players for modifying items, however it's only "easy" to get enhancements on different items that don't incur the "impropper slot penalty". The MIC has several items (like the Vest of Resistance, that duplicates the Cloak of Resistance' capablilities at the same price) that show that a little flexibility in item assignments is worthwhile so that you're putting excessive duress on a character who, like say a Sorcerer, not only benefit from, but practically count on, the bonuses from two items of the same slot(a la Cloak of Charisma and Cloak of Resistance). Generally I could easily see the Displacement effect being put on headband, robe, vest, or bracers. (despite the Vest's official slot of "class impovement" I treat the vest stot as generally interchangeable with Cloak). The Second Chance effect already duplicates a class ability, so I'd be willing to let it go to Vest anyway, even without my natural parallel. Otherwise it would fit well as amulet or bracer. And I think that either would work well as rings, which are a general "catch all" for magic effects. |
