Is there any spell, feat or something that can change a weapon type? Say you have a +2 long sword and want to change it into a +2 Scimitar. (this is just so I can stop my players saying “There must be a way!”)

Books aren't handy, but I think the Morphing enchantment in the Magic Item Compendium allows you to transform a weapon into any other similar sized weapon (light, one-handed or two-handed). It is a +2 equivalent enchantment IIRC, but you could change the longsword into a scimitar.

Because it is a +2 equivalent though, it would be cheaper just to buy a +2 scimitar rather than convert a +2 longsword into one...

morphing is +1 page 39 MIC and for a short time there is a 1st wizards spell weapon shift in spell compendium page 239

There was an old school 2nd ed spell that did this, 7th level from the Tome of Magic? Basically striped item A of it's magic and imbued it into item B. I'd charge either 1000 gold or 10% of the items cost whichever was more. Or you could try to trade weapons with a shop, for an appropriate fee of course.

Dispel Magic + Polymorph Any Object.

Dispel Magic or Greater Dispel Magic will suppress an item's powers for 1d4 rounds, specifically calling out that the item becomes non-magical for that time, and Polymorph Any Object can easily change the weapon's type, size, etc.

This method can't be used to create adamantine weapons, unfortunately, and it is subject to being dispelled.

This would only work for 1d4-1 rounds. Once the Dispel Magic effect wore off, the weapon would again be a magic item, and thus an invalid target for the Polymorph Any Object.

under most favorable circumstances, is PAO's duration permanent or instaintious? because if its the former, the dispel magic trick wont work, but it will if its the later (as it doesnt matter any more if the item is no longer a valid target, the change is over and done with)

It's permanent.
