If a character were hiding in a bag of holding (to sneak past guards, or somesuch) and the bag is destroyed, the contents are "lost forever."

What is the experience of the character in the bag? If he's brought back through True Resurrection, what would he have seen/felt/heard, etc.?

Suchthings are typicaly spued on to the astral plane a living person would (if they survived the bags destruction) just have survive on that plane or were ever they end up till rescued or they return on their own.

also, remember that a bag of holding has limited air.

If living creatures are placed within the bag, they can survive for up to 10 minutes, after which time they suffocate

Id say it would be very chaotic down there, with stuff flying around. If the bag is destroyed, you'd be trapped in the pocket dimension.. and without magic, you would just have enough time to say your last prayers ;)

Actually, Iver Gearsham is correct - A destroyed BoH, sends all its components to the Astral plane to drift forever in the wast unlimited astral plane.

So if a character was within the bag, he would now be adrift on the astral plane, without his silver cord - and thus in some effects - he would still be alive and something you cannot resurrect (since he has not departed to a deathplane) he is forever lost in an eternal drift between the other planes in the Astral Plane.

Not quite.... the silver cord isnt always in effect... only when you are projecting yourself into the astral plane and have a tie to a real body somewhere...

Really whats going on... is that char would be the only FULL person there... his body and soul have not seperated in the visit... so Any damage delt to him in the astral plane is natural... unlike when your projecting yourself outward.

He cannot be resurrected because he didnt die.. he has to be Summoned, or a gate opened to him, or someone go there and pick him up... you cant res something that never died.

Actually, the character in question is a Warforged (they don't breathe), but I left that detail out, given this isn't an Eberron board.

Anyway, not to pick nits, but the only reference to the astral plane comes into play when a Bag of Holding interacts with a Portable Hole. You put one into the other, and it either sucks everything within 10' into the gate created (destroying the bag and the hole!), or they're simply sucked into the astral plane and "lost forever."

I'm referring to when a bag is shot with an arrow, or dropped in lava, or torn from within. Nothing about the astral plane is mentioned there.

As a house rule, though, I'd be inclined to agree with the astral theory. :)

Note that a sufficiently planes-knowledgable character of decent level might be able to get back without much trouble (although it may take a while). A player who knows that the color pools to the Material are silver just from reading or hearsay should be able to get back in 1d10×50 hours, but that would require a high Knowledge (the planes) check. Some personal familiarity with the plane will cut that time down to 1d4×10 hours, and frequent past travel to such a color pool will cut it down to just 1d4×6 hours.

Also note that creatures on the Astral don't have to eat or drink for as long as they stay there. Finally, there is a 5% chance per hour that astral travelers will encounter creatures or inclement weather, meaning that even a knowledgable astral traveler might well meet his death before he finds his way to a useful color pool.

If the character doesn't know about the color pools, then he'd have to either wait for somebody to come by that he can beg to help him (but that somebody might try to kill him instead), or he can just pick a color pool at random and hope he comes out someplace pleasant. If he ends up alone in the middle of Hades, well, he's probably dead.

I'd say the character is trapped in the small pocket of the astral plane (the area that the bag opens and that the stuff is stored) since the way to this area is forever closed the character is trapped, for 10 minutes (unless of course they are wearing a necklace of clear air whatever it's called, or of an ability that doesn't require you to breathe) then you would die of dehydration and starvation ( unless you have a sustenance effect on) if you won't die of natural causes then you would be stuck there untill someone finds you and planeshifts, or gates you out. and if you stay there long enough you would die of old age (or by then you would probably commit suicuide from going totally insane from being alone and in the same space for so long)
