| themaskedknight11-18-04, 08:57 PM | at what level could a character be able to make a masterwork item?? is it based on a Character level 1st, 3rd, 5th, or higher? or is it based on the rank of the skill?? 4, 5, 6, or what? thanks for any help |

| Naeron11-19-04, 05:36 AM | The crafter must be able to make the DC20 craft check for the masterwork component of the item. With +2 from good tools, +2 from an assistant and +2 from a 14 INT that would only need someone to have 4 ranks and Taking 10 on the check. So it could be done at 1st level. However the higher the skill modifier the faster the work is done so most MW items are probably created by level 2+ craftsmen while the level 1 craftsmen concentrate on the easier work. |
| StevenO11-19-04, 08:16 PM | It works like Naeron said, you just need to make your DC 20 craft checks (preferably by taking 10). A skill modifier greater than +10 would make the work go faster but is not required. On a related note, I recall a question asking if a dwarf master craftman (lv 1, max ranks, skill focus feat, and all the other tricks to get +10 craft bonus) could start play with a masterwork item. I believe that any item you start with that you could craft (with take 10) should only cost 1/2 normal (material cost if I recall) so a masterwork item would be possible for a starting character. \ |

Glad to see I'm not the only person who uses this rule. ^_^ Yeah, that seems like a fair way to do things, especially if someone wants to play a "master craftsman" type to the point where their first level feat is Skill Focus for craft (not saying that's underpowered, but there are certainly Skill Foci that could have more frequent in-game use). If they can take 10 and make something like that, more power to 'em. |
