| DevilKiller03-11-07, 03:49 PM | The paladin in our Shackled City game had only summoned his special mount once by the time we were 13th level, so I suggested that he be allowed to replace it with the Charging Smite alternate class ability from PHB2. The DM said yes, and we've seen a few charging smites. The paladin noticed the Rhino's Rush spell last night. This doubles damage on charge attacks. Put the two together and that's a lot of damage. I had a thought today though. What if a paladin with Charging Smite managed to get a mount anyhow, such as through Wild Cohort, Leadership, or a druid party member who agrees to wildshape into a mount? If the paladin in question had a lance and Spirited Charge the damage could get really extreme. That is assuming that a mounted charge counts as a charge. I'm not really sure about that, and I guess that's why I'm posting. A 15th level paladin with Charging Smite gets +45 damage on a charging smite (15 for smite, 30 for CS). Triple that for a lance attack with Spirited Charge and that's +135 damage. Add Rhino's Rush and it would go up to +180, and that's before Str mod, Power Attack, or weapon damage. I'd expect to see damage in the 250 range on an average attack. I guess that's nothing compared to the Hulking Hurlers and the Pun-Pun, but it seems like a lot to me, maybe even too much. Is combining all this stuff legal by the RAW? Does it seem ovrpowered to you or just like an effective use of the material? |

I probably wouldn't allow a spell or feat that doubles damage outside of the core book and ones that are in the core book are reviewed with scrutiny. My DM didn't allow my 3.0 chr to wear Rhino Hide Armor, Spirited Charge, Lance to do RAW damage because it's not balanced. Couldn't argue that it is either. |
