| Nahameth06-07-07, 06:14 AM | hi there. need help with the spring attack. is it alowed to charge and spring attack after the charge-attack? i think it should, because charge is a fullround action but that does not exclude the content of spring attack thanx for your opinion and help :) |
| Karla06-07-07, 06:40 AM | Charging is a special full-round action that allows you to move up to twice your speed and attack during the action. You must move before your attack, not after. Spring Attack: When using the attack action with a melee weapon, you can move both before and after the attack Charging is a full-round action that allows you to make an attack after your movement. Spring Attack allows you to split your move action each side of an attack action. The two are thus fundamentally incompatible - you can't spring attack in a charge because a charge is an action of itself, not a move action plus an attack action. |

Agreed that by RAW, thay are incompatible. However this is stupid. (not you, the rules of course!) I would rule that you may Charge in conjunction with Spring Attack. My justification : when you Charge, you get the +2 att bonus from your momentum and inertia, no? But When you Charge, from a mechanical viewpoint in the game, you sprint at your opponent, stop dead in front of him and then swing your weapon at him. Stopping dead after sprinting, from a more "realistic" view, would totally unbalance you and should actually give you an attack penalty instead of a bonus. Sprinting at your opponent, striking him while moving (attack, Bull Rush, Overrun, etc.) and continuing your move should grant a bonus. It could be ruled that Spring Attacking while Charging could give you an even bigger bonus than a normal Charge. Thoughts? |

| Salla06-07-07, 04:39 PM | Here are some rules snippets from the SRD that indicate charge and Spring Attack are not compatible: You must move before your attack, not after. You must move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent. Both of these prohibit the primary benefit of Spring Attack, which is moving after the attack is made. |

I think the bonus from charge is not from momentum (because you have to stop moving, and you aren't actually going any faster than a double move), but instead represents the fact that you are focused on offense. You aren't changing direction, or running through underbrush, or dodging around, you are just moving in a straight line and attacking. This lets you focus on your attack, giving you a plus two, but it makes you easier to hit (-2 AC) and you can't do it over difficult terrain or around a corner. If you look at it this way, spring attack is the opposite of a charge, because in a spring attack, you are concentrating more on moving, instead of less. |
