Charge and melee reach question [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-24-05, 11:37 PM If a character charges an opponent with a 10-foot melee reach, does the opponent get an attack of opportunity? The chart on page 141 of the PHB says "no" to attacks of opportunity on a charge but the fact that the opponent has reach and the character is moving in and then out of a threatened square would make this a "yes", right?

I'm not sure about this one. But, the table has this to say:

Regardless of the action, if you move out of a threatened square, you usually provoke an attack of opportunity. This column indicates whether the action itself, not moving, provokes an attack of opportunity.
So, the action: Charge, does not provoke an AoO, but the movement action of leaving the 10-foot threatened square to the 5-foot square does provoke the AoO.

I think.

While we are all pretty hard-core RAW players, we still often keep forgetting to apply some of these AoO rules, having come from years of AD&D where it was just, "Get 'em!".

I think the footnote you pointed out does clear it up. Those attacks of opportunity can get confusing.

Just want to point out for the record that you can't Spring Attack on a charge.

07-25-05, 10:56 AM Maybe I'm dense, actually I know I'm dense, but just to clarify...who has teh reach weapon? If the defender of the charge has the reach weapon then yes, big whopping AoO. If the ATTACKER durning the charge has reach, then no AoO from the defender since he doesn't threaten the space occupied by the attacker.

Dang, nearly confused myself again...I AM dense.
