jimmyjames 01-07-05, 01:32 PM	I may be completely out to lunch ... but I seem to remember that in the PHB errata, they stated that "soft cover" applies only to ranged targets. ... so based off that ... since charge is a melee attack, a target cannot have "soft cover" against it .. so I'd think the charge scenario as you described is a legal tactic.

From the 3.5 SRD: You must have a clear path toward the opponent, and nothing can hinder your movement (such as difficult terrain or obstacles). Here’s what it means to have a clear path. First, you must move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent. (If this space is occupied or otherwise blocked, you can’t charge.) Second, if any line from your starting space to the ending space passes through a square that blocks movement, slows movement, or contains a creature (even an ally), you can’t charge. (Helpless creatures don’t stop a charge.) However, soft-cover can be foliage as well (providing concealment) and that would be different. From my understanding of your post you specifically wanted to know about charging someone when an ally (soft-cover) was in the way.

Except that with a reach weapon, you stop at the square behind your ally, so they're not in a square blocking your movement, it's perfectly legal, since the "Closest space from which you can attack the opponent" is unoccupied, you just have an ally between you and your target.
