I keep reading in these threads that alot of characters charge in a suprise round.
I was under the impression that charging was a full round action, and that you could only perform a standard action on a suprise round.

Charge is a rather unique exception.
Page 154-155 of the players handbook tells you that you can still charge when you only have a move or standard action available to you.
Although you can then only move up to your normal speed (as opposed to your double speed when you charge as a full round action) and you can only use this option when you are denied a full-round action (such as in a surprise round.)

So you can charge in a surprise round.
But you cannot decide on a standard action-charge when you have a full round available to you.
(example: You cannot charge an opponent moving your normal movement rate, attack and then use a move action to get away again)

You can also do it if you are slowed, or if you are a zombie limited to one action per round.

DOn't feel bad, there's 5 kajillion rules in there, groups play for years without finding them all
