| Malibu Trojan06-26-05, 09:49 PM | I have a character with the mount feats, including Ride-by-Attack. Normally if I charge a monster with reach, I provoke an attack of opportunity when I move adjacent to them (by leaving the outer square that they threaten). Ride-by-Attack says that I do not provoke any attacks of opportunity from the creature I charge. So with R-b-A, do I provoke AoO's from creatures (that I charge) with reach? Doesn't it seem silly if I don't provoke them when I ride-by but I do if I just plainly charge? |
| Nom06-26-05, 10:02 PM | The point of both the RBA and Spring Attack special abilities is that you can move in, get a free attack, and move away again without getting hit. It's rather fundamental to both these abilities that you don't provoke an AoO from the target. Reach is irrelevant. You don't provoke an AoO from your target either before, after or during the attack. This does not provide immunity to readied attacks, nor does it protect against AoOs from 3rd parties. |
| Ranix06-26-05, 10:02 PM | Might seem silly, depends how you look at it. Ride-By is really just a mounted Spring Attack if you look at it closely. You can ride by the hag without provoking but you take a hit if you charge head-on. One requires special training and the other is just rushing towards something with reckless abandon. Doesn't seem so silly anymore. |
| Dalthbar06-26-05, 10:07 PM | Let's also remember what an AoO is - it's a moment in which you are doing something that you do not have full focus on what's going on and your opponent is able to take advantage of that and get an attack of -OPPORTUNITY-. Your training is such that you eliminate those opportunities and thus the opponent does not have the chance to attack. |
| Ranix06-26-05, 10:09 PM | The crowd speaks in unison and the peasants rejoice. |
| Malibu Trojan06-26-05, 10:25 PM | So, with my feat, I provoke the AoO's when I charge head on against a creature with reach, but not if I charge as a ride-by? Why am I the only one who thinks this is weird? I'm not even attacking when the AoO is provoked, nor am I moving past them, which is what RbA really lets me do. |

You can ride by the hag without provoking but you take a hit if you charge head-on. One requires special training and the other is just rushing towards something with reckless abandon. Doesn't seem so silly anymore. Still seems silly. Why can't you use that "special training" while charging head on (instead of "rushing...with reckless abandon")? |

Why am I the only one who thinks this is weird?Because you've failed to realise that a normal charge can be made with a ride-by-attack, where the movement you make after charging happens to be 0 feet. When you charge as a ride-by-attack you can move up to double your speed in a straight line, but you do not have to move the full distance. You can stop any time after you've attacked, including right then. |

(Sorry if I seem a bit dense, but I think I started off with some unclear diction and it's only been compounded.) |

You paid for a feat which has the limitation that you must be mounted. |

Unless the creature had more than ten feet of reach, you wouldn't normally provoke an attack of opportunity when making a charge anyway. You wouldn't actually be leaving any threatened squares as you pass through the creature's reach. - horsie and rider - ogre - threatened space Approach --> Enter threat zone. Contact! Of course, having Ride-By-Attack makes this moot, but I just thought I'd point it out anyway. |

In most situations, anything that one of your squares does is considered to be done by all of you. |
| Alsharad06-30-05, 08:49 AM | I agree with everything else in this thread except for: Might seem silly, depends how you look at it. Ride-By is really just a mounted Spring Attack if you look at it closely. No, they are different. Ride-By is only usable during the charge action (which is a special full-round action). Spring attack allows you to move, make a standard attack, and then continue to move. You cannot charge and spring attack at the same time because they are two different types of actions. You CAN Ride-by and charge (in fact, it is the ONLY time that you can ride by). |
| Mahali Audran06-30-05, 04:04 PM | Approach --> Enter threat zone. Contact! Of course, having Ride-By-Attack makes this moot, but I just thought I'd point it out anyway. Umm, right there... you just left a threatend space. The front 2 squares of the horse (and you) left the square 10' away from the ogre and moved into the square 5' away. Without a feat or tumble to prevent an AoO you just provoked. |
