| Averroes10-05-07, 11:44 AM | Would this work. Paladin Charging on his Mount. Cast Rino's Rush, Smite, Powerattack, Divine Might Would this work? Rino's Rush is a swift action and the other actions are free actions. I'm wondering if this works, because he's doing like 80 something damage on non-crit charges. (This is with a powerattack of 7, with a two handed weapon, not a lance) Just seems really powerful, but I can't seem to find anything wrong with this. But its so much damage its offsetting out encounters. |
| Dog_O_War10-05-07, 12:00 PM | It would work only if your DM allowed you to cast three quick spells in a round. Otherwise, no. |
| kjenks10-05-07, 01:01 PM | Yes, it works fine. Add on Shock Trooper (Complete Warrior) for the Heedless Charge maneuver. And pick up a lance. You should be doing much more damage. Don't settle for a meager 80 HP. Paldin 7, Str 16, Cha 16, +1 lance: Attack bonus: +7 BAB (using Shock Trooper/Heedless Charge) +3 Str +1 enhancement +2 charging +3 Smite Evil === +15 attack Damage bonus: +14 Power Attack (using Shock Trooper/Heedless Charge) +5 Str +1 enhancement +7 Smite Evil +3 Divine Might === +30 damage Mounted lance charge (double damage) and Rhino's Rush (double damage): 3d8+90 Spirited Charge with lance (triple damage) and Rhino's Rush (double damage): 4d8+120 |

And no I wont tell him about your help. That's the last thing we need. Perhaps we should have more low ceilings and not let him use his mount for every single situation. |

Perhaps we should have more low ceilings and not let him use his mount for every single situation. A mount is not useful in every situation, but when a mounted charge works, it can be devastating. There are many ways that creatures can spoil a mounted charge. - Kill the mount - Trip the mount - Kill the rider - Disarm the rider - Dismount the rider (using a Trip attack opposed by a Ride check) - Break line of sight - Impose difficult terrain or any other way to slow the mount's movement - Impose a creature - Impose a wall - Move beyond charge range - Move closer than charge range - Move around a "corner" - Ready an action to move out of harm's way And there are several ways to accomplish each one of those, like using a Disarm attack or a Grease spell to disarm the rider, or using Invisibility or Obscuring Mist to break line of sight. Any time an intelligent monster meets up with a mounted cavalry opponent, they should consider that opponent to be the most dangerous foe on the battlefield and take appropriate measures. (Unintelligent monsters deserve to get skewered.) Notice that I didn't mention grappling as an option there. The game mechanics of grappling make it almost impossible to grapple a rider or a mount because of the rules about entering an occupied square. The game mechanics of Improved Grab make it almost impossible to grab a rider from the mount because the usual way to unseat a rider is with a Trip attack, not a Grapple attack. |
| Rulebook10-07-07, 07:24 AM | chargers are one of the worst things you can do with a mounted character its all about mounted archery. so wht if you hit less frequently and do less damage than a charger? you can skirmish tactic until the enemy is dead, and it works on vastly superior forces (something which SQUISH chargers quickly) |
| Stormbrand10-07-07, 10:09 AM | It would work only if your DM allowed you to cast three quick spells in a round. Otherwise, no. Smite is not a spell, nor is Power Attack. Divine Might is either a free action or a swift action, Rhino Rush is a swift action - so I would assume Divine Might & Rhino Rush could not be used together, although either could be combined with both Power Attack & Smite on a charge. Of course, too much BAB on Power Attack risks wasting the charge which spends both a Smite and a spell. |

Mounted archery cannot hold a strategic position. Vastly superior forces equipped with bows are just as deadly to a mounted archer (or his mount). If fighting a mounted archer, we just fire back from behind cover. Every tactic is limited. I think you are accustomed to inflexible foes, just be careful about victory disease and becoming inflexible yourself. Have a few back-up tactics in case. |
| kjenks10-07-07, 10:31 AM | Of course, too much BAB on Power Attack risks wasting the charge which spends both a Smite and a spell. That's why a charging paladin should consider a one-level dip into wizard/diviner -- the True Strike spell more than offsets that Power Attack penalty to attack bonus. When the paladin can afford it, a Lesser Metamagic Rod of Quicken will let him cast his low-level buff spells as swift actions. The Shock Trooper feat also has a tactic, Heedless Charge, that avoids the Power Attack problem by putting the penalty on AC instead of attack rolls. AC matters much less after a Ride-by Attack. |
