i know this may seem like a simple question to you Vets, but i'm not sure so i guess it's better to ask then to do it wrong!

Q: would a creature with 10' reach get an aoo against an opponent who is charging it, and passes thru one of the creature's threatened squares??

Yes.

(a classic tactic is to make this attack a trip attack so the charge never concludes)

Agreed.

Charge does not protect you from AoO's, it just does not by itself cause an AoO.

Note, more often it is the other way around, the charger has a reach weapon.

It gets even better.

There is a feat called "Hold the Line" that allows an AoO against a charging foe even if you aren't equipped with a reach weapon.

Originally in "Sword and Fist", and later in "FR: Shining South".

Charging serves many purposes.

It may be the only way you can attack that round (if the target is more than a single move action away).

It can be a more powerful attack (+2 to hit can be +4 damage with a two-handed weapon and power attack).

It may allow you to make a melee attack in the surprise round (when you can't move AND attack normally).

If a foe with reach is flat-footed they can't take an AoO unless they have combat reflexes. So if you win initiative and they're more than a move action away charging will let you close to melee distance and attack before they can make any AoO.

If you're a rogue charging may allow you to make a melee sneak attack (if you win initiative but are more than a move away).

Like any other tactic charging has its time and place and other times when its not such a good idea. Charging a large creature who likes to trip is asking for trouble.
