| JadeSpider964308-21-05, 02:46 AM | I'm still a relitively new player, and this is my first time actually assembling a high level full-attack action with TWF, now obviously I think I did it all correctly, but it seems a bit powerful so I'm doubtful. Here's the list of what I'm putting in and what i got out: Level 10 Ranger BAB: +10/+5 Str: 20 (+5) Feats: Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting (others that don't apply to this) Weapons: Longsword +2, Shortsword +2 Full Attack: +15 with Longsword (1d8+7) +15 with Shortsword (1d6+4) +10 with Longsword (1d8+7) +10 with Shortsword (1d6+4) And that's all before Power attacking... If it's right then fantastic, but let me run through how i got there, and mabye someone can show me where I went wrong if I did. Started with 2 weapons at +10 Bab +10 with Longsword +10 with Shortsword Added TWF penalties +8 with Longsword +8 with Shortsword Added extra attack from high BAB +8 with Longsword +8 with Shortsword +3 with Longsword Added extra attack from Improved TWF +8 with Longsword +8 with Shortsword +3 with Longsword +3 with Shortsword Added Str mod and weapon enhancements (+5, and +2 respectively) +15 with Longsword +15 with Shortsword +10 with Longsword +10 with Shortsword And that's what I did....anyone out there kind enough to tell me if I did it right or where I went wrong please? |
| Kratch08-21-05, 03:56 AM | math looks good to me. If memory serves though, you can't power attack with a light weapon, but if you power attack with the main hand, all attacks take the penalty. so when you power attack you take a hit to your off-hand to-hit chance with no damage benifit (would still boost your main hand damage normally). an unfortunate side effect of TWF with power attack. |

Kratch is correct on the no power attack with light weapons, and the penalties accruing to all of your attacks if you go that route. I will post a better idea shortly.... If it is not too late to change this aspect: forget the longsword and power-attack. Go with 2 short swords and improved critical as a feat instead of power attack. :twocents: |
| JadeSpider964308-21-05, 05:53 AM | Ahh well there's something I missed, no power attacking with light weapons *makes a mental note* Well thanks u2, and yeah james it's too late to switch power-attack, besides I need it for cleave/great cleave |

BTW, I think that cleave is A-OK, but great cleave is not so much. For a Fighter20 to have great cleave is one thing, for almost anyone else, it will come into play too few times to make any difference. |
| ShinAkuma208-21-05, 12:29 PM | I almost scrapped my Barbarian/Ranger TWF-er build...until I found Over-Sized Two-Weapon Fighting. With it, you can use a one-handed weapon as if it were light for the purpose of the TWF penalties. Hellooooo, TWF + Power Attack! |
| loaba08-21-05, 01:07 PM | ^That is a useful feat for the TWFer, but it is yet another resource that ya gotta spend. That is the sole bane of TWF - it is totally resource intensive. |
| The Amazing Dancing Bear08-21-05, 01:38 PM | I'm only going to ask this once: WHY DID YOU GIVE YOUR RANGER A STR OF 20? Are you insane? Does your DM not understand point buy? All that aside, you get cool points for taking TWF and whatnot. Having a longsword and a big piece of full plate strapped to your wrist is not, will not be, and has ne'er been spiffy. |
| jaelis08-21-05, 01:38 PM | JadeSpider- Your build looks fine. Don't worry about power attack. There will be plenty of times when you can't make a full attack, and then you can wield your longsword in two hands and get the good PA ratio. Quickdraw helps with that tactic, I'd try to take it if you can. jaelis |
| Tyler Do'Urden08-21-05, 02:22 PM | I'm only going to ask this once: WHY DID YOU GIVE YOUR RANGER A STR OF 20? Are you insane? Does your DM not understand point buy? I fail to see how a melee-oriented character with a Strength of 20 constitutes insanity. And a lot of people (myself included) don't use point buy because they find it too limiting. So maybe he just rolled that and the rest of his stats aren't 8s. I keep seeing people with these weird "WTF!?!" reactions to perfectly ordinary things like buying your starting equipment or the jump skill. |

Having a longsword and a big piece of full plate strapped to your wrist is not, will not be, and has ne'er been spiffy.WTH are you talking about? piece of full-plate straped to my wrist??? Cookie for Tyler :cookie: And for the record I always buy my own starting gear, and I have 5 ranks in Jump  |
