| dirkformica01-09-07, 07:17 PM | Warning this is a RAW question about the already cheesy Nightsticks from Libris Mortis. Can a character use the rod for the extra 4 turning attempts and then pass it to another character who then gains the extra attempts or are they used up by the first character? There doesn't seem to be any charge or uses per day limitation in the description. So if a party of Clerics all had nightsticks, could they just pass them around? I did mention the fromage in the title. |
| ShinAkuma201-09-07, 07:51 PM | I guess that would work...I don't anything specific that would limit it. Just keep in mind how things like this work. If you get extra uses of something, then lose whatever it was that gave extra uses, you're still down for the day. For example, if you normally have 4 turn attempts, and you have Nightsticks, that gives you 8. Say you use 4, then give the Nightsticks to somebody else. You now have used 4 out of your 4 Turn Attempts for the day, so you're down to none. CHeck the FAQ for precedent on prepared spells for the day. You can still get around this by blowing through all 8 (or whatever) before passing them on, but it's still something to consider. |
| Jay_Ibero_91101-09-07, 07:54 PM | Wow...I think you just broke my cheese-o-meter...The night stick does give the bearer the extra turning feat, so you could just pass it around, since the # of turn attempts come from the character and not the item. However, if handing off the stick would reduce a PC's remaining turn attempts to zero or less, you obviously can't use any more turn attempts until the next day, or until an effect would raise your number of turn attempts to a positive number. Would have the same effect as passing around a cloak of charisma basically. |
| risner01-09-07, 08:21 PM | Cleric 1 has 3 turns / day Cleric 2 has 2 turns / day Cleric 1 holds Nightstick. Cleric 1 uses 5 turns, he has 2 remaining. Cleric 1 hands Nightstick to Cleric 2. Cleric 1 now has 0 (zero) turns per day. Cleric 2 uses 5 turns, he now has 1 remaining. Cleric 2 hands the Nightstick to Cleric 1. Cleric 1 has 2 remaining. Cleric 2 has 0 remaining. Cleric 1 hands the Nightstick to Cleric 2. Cleric 1 has 0 remaining. Cleric 2 has 1 remaining. That is RAW by the strickest meaning. I would rule the Nightstick took 24 hours to attune itself to you to prevent two Clerics passing it around to get a total of 8 possible additional turns/day. |

Well if they need to turn undead - just pass the nightstick back. :P Or have on cleric who's set up to turn, in the company of the others, who ends up being the last cleric to get the stick. :) |

| fatal error01-09-07, 10:16 PM | So, can you have negative turn attempts? Or else, if giving away a nightstick would bring you to below 0, you go to 0. Then, when you are handed back the stick, why wouldn't you go back to 4? Just something more to think about. |
| GhostStepper01-09-07, 10:25 PM | Am i the only one imagining a team of clerics running a relay, passing the nightstick as they come around the track? lol |
| ShinAkuma201-09-07, 10:29 PM | So, can you have negative turn attempts? Well, sort of. Your ability uses per day go up, rather than down. Rather than thinking of having 8 out of 8 turns, then using one gives you 7 out of 8 turns, think of it as having used 0 out of 8 turns. When you use one, you have used one out of 8 turns. If an item changes your maximum uses per day, your total used per day doesn't change. As such, if you had 8 turn attempts, and you use 5, then give away the Nightsticks, you have used 5 out 4 turns, meaning that, even if you gain an additional one (say, through a Cha buff), you won't have any additional uses. |

| Kradlo01-09-07, 10:57 PM | I thank you for raising this issue. My house rule is going to be that the nightstick has, in effect, four turn undead charges within it per day. That should stop any baton passing, unless they want to split up those four charges. That's not a comment on the RAW, just my house rule for my campaign. Your mileage may vary. |
