Lluks 04-29-08, 11:51 PM	Okay, so can anybody help me here? My player wants to use a choke wire as a weapon... are there rules, or a thread, that covers that? He basically wants to have a really strong, tight wire that he wraps around the enemy's neck, digging into it and strangling them. Can anyone tell me how that works?
ksbsnowowl 04-30-08, 01:01 AM	It is called a garrote. There are rules for them in the old Song and Silence book (3.0). It's possible there are also rules for them in either Complete Adventurer or the Arms and Equipment Guide, but that's just a guess.
Orenmir 04-30-08, 10:24 AM	I think the garrote was also updated in a Dragon Mag article -- I don't know which one. I do know it made it into the Dragon Compendium though.
Vharuck 04-30-08, 11:14 AM	If you don't have access to the above-mentioned material or simply don't want to buy/look up the section on garrotes, then I think houseruling it in would work well like this: a garrote can only be used after you grapple (or maybe even pin, your choice) an opponent, and then normal rules for suffocation (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/environment.htm#suffocation) apply.
herrdoktor 04-30-08, 11:45 AM	he could also consider being a swordsage (tome of battle) and focusing on shadow hand - that school has a number of maneuvers (like, well, shadow garrote) that emulate such an action for respectable damage at range
sin shai, nagai jedi 04-30-08, 11:51 AM	funny thing about garrotes in DnD is that they didn't suffocate the garrotee, they just did damage to them each round they were grappled. meaning they kind of sucked... though a good way to make them not suck is to use a locking garrote with an enchancment bonus and a enchantment that deals damage like flameing or shocking. if your a rogue, just make the grapple check from the shadows, skean attack them with it, then walk away are they start taking damage each round as they struggle to get free.
