| Taureus_Drakken07-27-07, 02:27 PM | Circlet of Persuasion This silver headband grants a +3 competence bonus on the wearer’s Charisma-based checks. Faint transmutation; CL 5th; Craft Wondrous Item, eagle’s splendor; Price 4,500 gp. Based on the entry in the DMG, would it be fair to say that you could have an item crafted to mirror the Circlet of Persuasion, but for other abilities? Belt of Sinew (+3 competence bonus on Str checks) Gloves of Nimbleness (+3 competence bonus on Dex checks) Vest of Stamina (+3 competence bonus on Con checks) Headband of Acumen (+3 competence bonus on Int checks) Amulet of Sagacity (+3 competence bonus on Wis checks) And I have calculated the formula for finding the cost to upgrade the bonus as Bonus squared × 500 gp. Example: Circlet of Persuasion (3x3) x 500 = 4500 gp. The bonus could vary as follows: +1 competence bonus: 1000 gp; pay 1000 gp to upgrade to +2. +2 competence bonus: 2000 gp; pay 2500 gp to upgrade to +3. +3 competence bonus: 4500 gp; pay 3500 gp to upgrade to +4. +4 competence bonus: 8000 gp; pay 4500 gp to upgrade to +5. +5 competence bonus: 12500 gp; pay 5500 gp to upgrade to +6. +6 competence bonus: 18000 gp; pay 6500 gp to upgrade to +7. +7 competence bonus: 24500 gp; pay 7500 gp to upgrade to +8. +8 competence bonus: 32000 gp; pay 8500 gp to upgrade to +9. +9 competence bonus: 40500 gp; pay 9500 gp to upgrade to +10. +10 competence bonus: 50000 gp. Does this make sense to everyone else? |
| Kradlo07-28-07, 02:23 AM | Interesting progression. I note that the body slots you've used do seem to match the ability checks they boost. But I'd look at possibly picking other body slots that are a close, though not exact, match. The circlet of persuasion, which grants competence bonus to Charisma-based checks, can be used in conjunction with a cloak of charisma. The belt of sinew would prevent wearing a belt of giant strength. The gloves of nimbleness would prevent wearing gloves of dexterity. The headband of acumen prevents wearing a headband of intellect. The amulet of sagacity would prevent wearing a periapt of wisdom. The only item you've listed that would not preclude a related ability enhancer would be the vest of stamina, which would not prevent wearing an amulet of health. So, the concept is good, but I'd suggest modifying the body slots for your items with this in mind. |

| jaelis07-28-07, 09:44 AM | The armbands of might (CV) give a +2 bonus on Str checks, and are reasonably in line with your price, though they have another ability that complicates things. (Did they make it into the MIC?) |
| Taureus_Drakken07-28-07, 11:39 AM | @Kradlo: Actually, it wouldn't prevent you from wearing the ability boosting item. Since the crafting rule for items changed in the MIC, you don't multiply the cost when you add the ability boost to an item, as long as it matches the body-affinity slot. So if you were going to have Gloves of Dex +2, Nimbleness +1; the cost would be 4750gp. It would be better to have the Nimbleness +X be the first ability, because when you later add the Dex +2 (or +4 or +6) it doesn't get multiplied. If you wanted both items, you could have them both crafted into one item, and it would actually be cheaper. Remember, you don't adjust the more expensive magic item ability, and multiply the second most expensive magic item ability by 75%, and each one after that by 50%. @Servan: Are you meaning multiplying the cost of the items as outlined in my table, or if the slot changed as Kradlo suggests? The original Circlet of Persuasion matches up with one of the Cha affinities, and I just followed with the rest as I feel they match up. @Jaelis: The Armbands of Might (which did make it into the MIC) also give bonus damage when using Power Attack when worn. So yes, that complicates things, as I just want the item to give a competence bonus on ability-based checks. As a note; I had originally tried to take the Pale Green Ioun Stone, and work backward from being a slotless item. But only the save bonus can be calculated as per the DMG. I couldn't figure out how much the attack bonus was worth. |
