Hello,

*waves*

I was just wondering about something concerning the Cleric's Turning ability. It says in the Player's Handbook 3.0 for Destroy Undead: If you have twice as many levels (or more) as the undead have Hit Dice, you destroy any that you would normally turn.

Is the levels being referenced here the actual class level of the Cleric or is this level referring to the effective turning level of the Cleric?

Also, if there are any changes to this from 3.5 it would be greatly appreciated. As I should be getting my 3.5 books in a few days. :)

Thanks :)

It should be the basic Cleric level, so Turning check shouldn't affect it.

If you're a 4th level Cleric, then you can destroy undead of 2HD or less, assuming they don't have Turn Resistance.

So even if your Turning Check would be 22 or higher, meaning you could Turn undead of 8th level or lower (I'm still talking about that 4th level Cleric), you still couldn't Destroy undead other than 2HD or less, because your effective Cleric level is 4.

Remember that Paladins have even harder time Turning and Destroying undead with Turn Undead ability, because their effective Cleric level is 3 less than their Paladin level. So a 4th level Paladin could only Turn 1HD undead (with Turning Check of +-0), and a 4th level Paladin couldn't basically destoy any undead unless they'd be 1/2HD undead.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, according to the example given in the 3.5 PHB you base destroying undead on your actual level.

(In the example Jozan gets a +3 on his turn level check, but still only turns 2HD Zombies rather than destroying them.)
