My character in an upcoming game will be using a Ranseur, but I'm not terribly experienced in DnD and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for ways to employ it. I do have a few specific questions:

Are there any particular tactics you've found useful/interesting in employing big, pointy sticks?
Right now I'm looking at Combat Reflexes and AoO for battlefield control, and armor spikes/razors for when the enemy closes in. However, putting the emphasis in the question on STICK, I'm also thinking that the butt end of the weapon could be basically used as the tip of a ten-foot pole...so what should I put on it? I thought a small T shaped metal hook for grabbing things at a distance might be useful, but the shape of a Ranseur means it can pretty much do that normally (it gets a +2 to Disarm). Does anyone have other suggestions? Think outside the box. :D

Oh, and if it matters, my character is a fighter/wizard type so ideas incorporating a staff might also work. Are there rules for attaching weapon heads to those? Couldn't you pretty much use a MW weapon as the base item?

"This is my Staff of Frost PLUS POINTY END!"

Skeletons. Haft bashing. Howzit work?
...or would it? Basically, what would you say the rules are for side-swiping something like a skelly to deal blunt damage instead of piercing? Seems to me like an improvised weapon and I doubt the damage would be worth it, probably best to just take the 50% from using Piercing. But that said, are there any unique ways to use the weapon in combat aside from the obvious?

Are there rules for making a reach weapon completely out of metal?
...Or are there types of wood I should be looking at for the haft? When it comes to getting my weapon sundered, it doesn't look like Aurorum (self-repairing metal) will do me any good since a large part of the weapon is wood. This wouldn't be so much of an issue with a Spiked Chain since it's all metal, but polearms seem kind of unique in being made of two very different materials. Anyone found other good ways to deal with this?

Right now I'm leaning towards a metal shaft, except to cut weight it'd use a lattice type structure inside instead of being either totally solid (heavy) or hollow (fragile). That would probably be a headache as far as figuring out Hardness/HP/Weight, though. I'm thinking it'd have to be MW, as well. Seems like a lot of work for the DM so if there's a cleaner solution, I'd prefer it.

Thanks in advance. :D

Right now I'm looking at Combat Reflexes and AoO for battlefield control, and armor spikes/razors for when the enemy closes in.An enlarged person with reach can effectively cover a 50' wide area (typically this is the entirety of any given battlefield). Your AoO's can then hinder pretty much any movement, spell use, ranged weapon use, etc.

Even if you have enemy wizard casting defensively, a readied action can still stop him.

Also, there is the ol':
1) Trip opponent with AoO as he tries to reach you (taking free attack from improved trip)
2) When he tries to stand, disarm him with the AoO.
3) When he tries to retrieve his weapon, trip him again with the AoO.

Haft bashing. Howzit work?I personally allow hafted weapons to be used as improvised (i.e. -4) quarterstaves.

Are there rules for making a reach weapon completely out of metal? Not that I know of, but it would seem reasonable to allow mithral hafted weapons.

Lets start off with this ... Reach weapons kick ass.

Are there any particular tactics you've found useful/interesting in employing big, pointy sticks?
Theres several ways to go with it, but Combat Reflexes for the AoO's rules. Totally dominate the battlefield. Power Attack helps because most reach weapons are 2-handed, thus its 2 for 1 off the base attack. I actually have a perfect example of this.
I have a halfling rogue/fighter (lvl 6/2) with the Talenta Sharash (Eberron campaign setting) that has a 10 ft reach and deals about 1d8+19 with the power attack. With Combat Reflexes, I get 6 Aos's, so generally I'm tumbling into the middle of a fight and setting up AoO's and flanking with my allies. Also, I have a feat from a Dragon mag, Backstab, that lets me get an AoO if an enemy I'm flanking attacks someone other than me.
As for special materials, due to acid breathing dragons I had the blade constructed of mithral, and the half made of darkwood or something, but I wanted max hardness and hit points. Plus, making it magical helps all that as well.
Your ideas about what to put on the other end (i.e., metal arms, grapplings hooks, etc) are kinda cool. What about a noose-type thing, like the kender's hoopak, so you could like snare an animal or something. Loop it around its neck, as a grapple maybe, to restrict its movement. Maybe you could take specs from the net or something. Its an idea.
As for improvised weapons, use it as a quaterstaff with a -4 penalty. Least, thats how I would rule it.
Go for items and spells that will maximize your ability to strike as many times as possible, with the most pluses. Bull's Strength, Haste, Enlarge Person, and the like.
Good luck and enjoy!!

My tactic is using an eversmoking bottle and then a spell from the complete adventurer to get blindsight. As long as you don't stand right next to your opponent you have invisibility unbreakable by see invisibility or true seeing.

If you're a fighter/wizard going for the ultimate utility weapon you could have your spells etched into the haft instead of your spellbook, the rules are found in complete arcane somewhere (away from books atm)

-circumstance bonus on some Jump checks (pole vault)
-remote pit trap finder and "questionable area" poker
-wedge vs. portculis or a "new york lock" (brace on door @ 45 degrees)

haft question: mvincent's answer seems reasonable enough. many would call it a staff, but you're kinda' cheating it then. Imp. Weapon should work
full metal haft: i suppose you could though it would effect performance considerably. i mean, this isn't a short haft like a morning star, you know? will change inertia, weight, balance, etc. probably why they went w/ wood to begin w/. that and cost i'd wager. i guess if you had a good Str. others might even go so far as to call it an Exotic weapon. your call

Of course, you could just have the haft made of mithral (500gp / pound), which would toughen it up but keep its weight down a lot. Just an idea.

ah, good loophole. should've thought of that.
think they listed Bruenor's stats in Silver Marches to which he is listed as having a mithral hafted axe. ironically, there are no "special provisions" made under Aegis Fang for Wulfgar which seems off. i mean, it was the culmination of his total smithing prowess, right?

Hitting people with the pointy end.

Okay, the serious answer is to use the Explosive enchantment. Everyone within 5' of the person you hit with the weapon has to make a Reflex save or take additional damage.

Wow. Given crazy reach with Enlarge and lots of AoOs, that sounds great. Only problem is I'd likely catch my party members in the blast as often as enemies...

If I hollow out a compartment in the haft somewhere, what's a good thing to store in it? Wands, scrolls....anyone have stuff that comes to mind?

A) If you make good on your hook idea for the other end, you'll gain a bonus climbing down steep drops up to 15 feet. Hook the end over the ledge, and climb down your weapon. Lift it off the edge when you're at the bottom. I'd say it would probably grant a +2 circumstance bonus to the climb check (but wouldn't stack with the bonus from climbing gear or rope).

Just don't slip (ie: fail the climb check by 5 or more)... having a ranseur edge graze your groin won't be pleasant.

Reverse the process to go up steep edges.

B) See how the picture in the PHB shows leather bound around the ranseur's haft? A clever adventurer would replace that with an unrollable silk-rope braid that, when removed, could act as a handy (albeit short) length of rope. Good for tying up prisoners, pulling levers from a distance, tying the weapon to a hand (likely +2 vs. being disarmed), or even adding an extra 5 feet to the climb (as above).

EDIT:

Also. look into paying a craftsman to make the ranseur into sections that screw together. That way when you're tight for space you can take it apart and keep it for later use.

Ah, DnD. This is why pnp beats computers--if you can come up with it, you can try to do it. :D

How about Spring attack? You would be able to move in attack and move back. This would force them to move through a threatened area to reach you with a melee attack.

It's useful, but it's way too feat intensive for my build (Ftr 1 / Wiz 6 / Spellsword 3 / Eldritch Knight 10). Between Practiced Spellcaster, Power Attack + Leap Attack, Arcane Strike, and my AoO feats--Combat Expertise, Robilar's Gambit, Combat Reflexes, Improved Trip -- I barely have room for my essential metamagic feats, let alone the Spring Attack feat tree.

What is Robilar's Gambit? I play a character that uses Power Attack, Combat Reflexes, and I'm thinking about Leap Attack. My char is 6 Rogue / 2 Fighter, so I try to flank more, and I was thinking about going with Powerful Charge and whatever feat it is that gives me +4 to flank instead of +2. Sounds like you're doing sorta the same thing, except with magic instead of sneak attacks. What is the feat, and where do I find it?

Right now I'm looking at Combat Reflexes and AoO for battlefield control, and armor spikes/razors for when the enemy closes in. That's a fine tactic. Cleave and Whirlwind Attack are also good with reach weapons, because you threaten a larger area. Also, when you make an attack that provokes with a reach weapon, against a non-reach victim, he doesn't get to take the AoO (at worst, some DMs house-rule he can take it as a Disarm or Sunder).

Getting Englarged when you have reach can also be a big plus. Going from 10' to 20' reach can quite suddenly change the complexion of the battlefield.

If you have someone else enlarging you, it might even surprise you how far away you can manage a full attack. When you get Enlarged, you go from a 1x1 base to a 2x2 base - 4 squares, one of which must be the one you were in when size M. You get to choose how you position yourself, so just getting enlarged can put you 5' closer to the enemy. Your reach doubles, putting your threatened area another 10' closer, and you can 5' step. You can end up taking a full attack on someone that ended his turn 30' away from you. Pretty disconcerting.

Haft bashing. Howzit work? There aren't specific ones, though there's a feat called 'spinning halberd' that does it, for halberds, which aren't reach, so I don't know why I even mention it.

Some DMs allow you to do something like it, but even if they don't the improvised weapon rules could be brought in. It's fairly sucky, but treating the haft of a polearm as an 'improvised quarter staff' is pretty reasonable.

Are there rules for making a reach weapon completely out of metal? Yes, it's called the almighty spiked chain. Exotic weapon, threatens reach & adjacent, trip special, disarm special, finesseable.

polearms seem kind of unique in being made of two very different materials. As a DM, I ruled that the magic of enchanted polearms is in the metal bits, and repairing or replacing the haft is a fairly quick & simple Craft (Weapons) check.

I've been putting together a Gish build for a few days and plan on using the Staff Familiar varient so that my voulge can be my staff. He'll also have heavy boots with steel plated toes and heels, possibly with spikes on them, that act as gauntlets so he can kick the snot out of people when they close within 5 feet.

PHB II Feat. You may wanna buff up before using it (I'm a Gish so I plan to).

If you adopt the stance, it lasts a full round (like Dodge, you can have it active or not...except this one has downsides). Enemies get +4 to attack and damage on you, but you get an AoO for every attack they deal, the main difference being you resolve your AoO *after* they attack you (even if they miss).

Great way to get tons of AoOs, but it's limited by how many you can use in a round anyways, and it comes at the cost of making you easier to squish. Good to use if you're fighting weak things that can barely hit, or if you've debuffed the enemies with Ray of Enfeeblement and such. Also good if you've buffed yourself.
