I have been looking for ages for the cloak of flying in the DMG and can't find it anywhere. :weep:

I know it use to be able to transform from a cloak into wings (type of your shoice) at will, and cost close to 22,000 gp.

But if i read right, to get a cloak of flying now would cost 60,000 gp. And flight wasn't worth 22,000 gp, let alone 60.

Have i missed something? Is there anything in the MIC? (i've been thinking of getting it.)

The main question is about the price, because i wanted to enchant a dragonhide mantle to become a cloak of flying, but if it now costs even more than it did before, then i won't even consider it.

Edit: And it's called, "Wings of Flying."

ouch. My poor bank account. T~T

They havent always been this expensive, have they? I'll never be able to afford that.

Where did i get 22,000 from then? Is there some way to reduce the price?

As far as I know, they have always been that expensive. If you want cheaper, look at the Broom of Flying, Carpet of Flying or Winged Boots.

They used to cost 5,500 in 3.0... About 10 times less

Flight is a powerful ability, I guess, but taking up the cloak slot and costing 56k is a bit much.

Back in 3.0 they MISPRINTED them as 5000

They errated it up to 22,000 but many people 'forgot' to check the errata.

is flight really that powerful? I,personally, have never been in a situation where permenant flight was anything more than convenient. It has never been necessary.

Maybe i could use that as grounds for buying at the 3.0 price. I only really want the cloak because its cool:

Picture a cloak of black dragon scales with gold scales around the egde and red scaled on the interior. Then they change into great dragons wings. (I actually want to change them into black feathered wings, but since the cloak is dragonscale, dragon wings are more appropriate.) 56K if too expensive for something i want just for looks. but 22 is slightly more bearable. :D

If you want a flying cloak that's easier on your wallet, then you should get a Cloak of the Bat (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#cloakoftheBat). It's priced at 26k.

Sorry fireclave, but the cloak of the bat really isn't what i was looking for.

I want the same benefits of the wings of flying, but i want the enchantment on a dragonhide mantle.

I've heard in places that you can reduce the cost of magic items by making them useable by only certain classes or races. Is that true? If so, how does it work?

This cost reduction is not intended for player-designed items. Otherwise every player would make up items and say, "Dang, this is only usable by a half-elf druid with green hair and chubby thighs!...wait a second! I'm a half-elf druid with green hair and chubby thighs! How convenient."

It's not really a penalty if it's designed around the character it's intended for.

It may not be the exact same effect, but it is a similar effect that is closer in your price range. You're simply not going to find always-on, no hassle, 60ft (good) flight for cheap. I guess you could always make a cape version of the Winged Boots.

And unless you're trying to get some kind of mechanical benefit out of it, the material you make your item out of is pretty irrelevant. IMO, if you want your magic item made out of some exotic material, as long as you supply it, you're good to go.
