Basically, the gnomes invented clockwork armor (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/cw/20070212a) to help destroy their bitter enemies, the kobolds. The new weapon was devestating, but during a tunnel fight, one of the improved soldiers was caught (frozed actually) and the kobolds took the armor. They took ideas from the captured armor and attempted to reverse-engineer it. Since kobolds are better at sorcery than artificing they altered the disign to be powered by socerery. To activate the suit for a day, a spell must be sacrificed, the more powerful, the better. Also, the other abilities of the suit (spell effects, etc.) require additional spell slots. To pay tribute to their dragon heritage (not to mention get an advantage on their enemy), the kobolds made their creations into a dragon form and more ride in it than have it increase their abilities (it has its own stat block, increased when animated with a higher spell). While sorcerers are the most common (lots of spell slots), any small arcane caster cane power the machine. |
