Anyone ever actually marked off a 5-ft square? That's 25 square feet, you know. I tried to actually mark it out in my dorm room so I could see if I could fence in that small of space, but I realized I didn't even have that much floor space! Sure, my room might have more actual floor, but most of it was taken up by furniture.

So considering it takes two to tango, that means two fighters need 50 square feet of space to fight in! Anything less than that will either be a grapple (in which case anything but light weapons are useless) or squeezing (-4 attacks and AC, half movement rate). This also means that to threaten 5 feet all around you, your character has to practically be doing laps of that square, not to mention the gymnastics a Small character would have to be doing!

I think these kind of close quarters are underused in combat and could make for an interesting fight from time to time, such as in the Bride/Elly brawl in Kill Bill 2. What do you think?

Make a feat that gives you a +1 dodge bonus to AC if you use a melee weapon smaller than your opponent's.

Oookay...

I was actually thinking more along the lines of what creative ways have other people used close quarters, or how would such close quarters work in your game?

Anyway, in such conditions small weapons are already very powerful, since they can be used in grapple while others can't.
