Has anyone else noticed the cost to create cold-iron weapons now? The Magic Item Compendium has recently reprinted the cost for creating cold-iron weapons, but it's different from the DMG. I'm wondering, is this a mis-print or is this the new rules clarification for pricing cold-iron now? It doesn't seem very PC friendly!

The magic Item Compendium revised the rules and pricing for many of it's items, including the costs for Cold Iron(supposedly to bring it more in line with the prices of other special materials).

Though, to be honest, I cannot for the life of me fathom WHY the massive increase in price, especially considering the comparitive costs of Alchemical Silver...

In all honesty, it looks like they mangled the DMG price in trying to put it into a table... but I can't say for sure if that's what actually happened.

I'd say ignore it. After all, unless it is errata, the earliest rule always takes precedent. ;)

Nobody, does that mean you are going to ignore all the FAVORABLE rules in the MIC that reduce prices, simply because they contradict what is in the DMG?

If you accept the MIC price reductions, you really should also keep their price increases.

I don't have the MIC tarkin. And I was indicating only ignoring that one specific rule. :)

More to the point, I dislike the fantastic material pricing immensely - but I dislike the standard fantastic materials just as much. Mostly because it doesn't work with the crafting rules (something else I have a problem with.

My own personal issues aside, While you could try and argue it, I actually do agree with you Tarkin. If you are adopting the entire MIC crafting system, then it would be sort of silly to say "all of this but". It does create the dreaded slippery slope.

I don't know enough about the MIC to say that the rules as a whole are better or worse. I was just pointing out the order of importance in regards to splat/core discreprencies. :)

While I'm still looking for an explanation that might be more "official" (I actually submitted this same question to the 'Ask the Sage Online') I can very easily see your point. My own DM asked that I look into it, and I'll let him know. This is still open for debate/discussion should anyone have any new information to add.

Thanks

I can't quote a source.

I can't quote an issue#

But I think I read a fiction piece in Dragon Magazine, long ago, about a poor smith's son that bought a "Shadow" in a bottle. And when the bottle broke, they killed it by beating it to death with a cold iron wrought fire-poker.

Why does a creature's "one weakness" always have to be *expensive*? As I recall, wooden stakes don't cost much, either.

I would have to agree. Making Cold Iron cost 2000gp per item(and DOUBLING the costs of all magical enhancements put on it) literally makes NO SENSE, especially considering alchemical silver(it's closest relative) is less than 100gp per item, and cold Iron itself adds no other benefits to the weapon.

Here how I've always viewed it:
1. Weapon price is doubled.
2. There is a one-time 2000gp cost when magicing the weapon.

I know its not what the "rules" say, but its like the pirate code. It's more of a guideline. Also any "rule" revisions are put to a democratic vote by the group.

Those were the original rules for enchanting it. The "new rules"(as layed out in the table on pg 27 of the Magic Item Compendium) have it cost double for enchantment and +2000gp simply to make the weapon.

Which, again, makes me wonder if they didn't simply mangle the information out of the DMG, rather than actually presenting a real 'revision'.

The MIC also states that this is a summary of the the special items listed on page 283 of the DMG.

HMMM.... Oh MIC'y your so fine, your so fine you blow my mind! Hey MIC'y!

Sorry about that the song was playing in my mind.:D

I don't have that book but if they increased the base price to match other special materials AND kept the increased cost of enchanting it that is overboard unless they gave it some other incredible properties.

I'll admit the way it used to be handled was a little complicated when it came to enchanting the stuff but I'd hope that only one big change would be needed. Spending 2000 gp for what often will be no change to a weapons stats seems extreme although doubling the cost of enchantments is probably easier than the old method.
