Cold Iron enhancements [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-25-06, 09:58 PM I know that I have to spend an extra 2000 gold to make a masterwork cold iron longsword into a +1 cold iron longsword. Do I need to pay the 2000 penalty when I take it to +2? And if I do, do I have to pay 4000 to take it straight from +1 to +3, or can I skip that by doing both bonuses at the same time?

Iron, Cold: This iron, mined deep underground, known for its effectiveness against fey creatures, is forged at a lower temperature to preserve its delicate properties. Weapons made of cold iron cost twice as much to make as their normal counterparts. Also, any magical enhancements cost an additional 2,000 gp.
Items without metal parts cannot be made from cold iron. An arrow could be made of cold iron, but a quarterstaff could not.
A double weapon that has only half of it made of cold iron increases its cost by 50%.
Cold iron has 30 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 10.

The text for Cold Iron is kinda vague, huh? I'm thinking that this probably applies only to the first enchantment made on the weapon, be it just a +1 or a +3 Flaming weapon...I'm thinking the additional charge would STILL be only 2,000gp.

Anyhow, this is only my interpretation and how I would rule it in one of my games. Hope it helps.

It also happened to agree with the RAW, for once.

A masterwork enchanted to +3 is ONE enhancement, not three, so its 2,000 extra.

If you later raise it from +3 to +4, its another 2,000, because its a second, separate enhancement.

I'll see if I can find it.....

Arrgh....can never figure out how to extract from .pdf file....*mutter*
