| TrackStar03-14-08, 11:54 AM | What are some cheep and good items that help protect you from cold weather<extreme cold>? I'm starting a character in a campaign thats set it a very cold and snowy place. |
| Bloodsoul03-14-08, 01:34 PM | Cold Weather Outfit, Winter Blanket, and when you come into the money, Boots of the Winterlands is decent. |
| Hsien03-14-08, 01:47 PM | A Scarf!!!! sorry inside joke in my group. Barbarian that had very few clothes wanted to go across town. It was -50 degrees out, but it was ok because he had a Scarf. (later we found out he had missed the whole "negative" part of that degree description. ) back on track... MIC has an item Orb of Environ Protection; not sure of cost but relatively cheap and has a 60' radius, iirc |
| key03-14-08, 02:13 PM | Don't forget extra socks and gloves. On the Science Channel they showed people who had really bad frostbite on their feet and hands after climbing Mt. Everest. Many of them lost toes and fingers. |
| 1 ton ghost03-14-08, 02:23 PM | my boy Craig, and ultimately, the rest of the campaign party became really keen on these: Travel Cloak. the old ones in Magic of Faerun were incredibly useful, albeit 3.0edition though. it would provide the necessary food/day in one pocket, hot tea and/or water in the other pocket, continuous Endure Elements effect, and w/ a flourish, turn into a 1 person tent. pretty sweet. i'd be alot more apt to go camping if i had this. cross country adventuring sucks. basically, it's the Endure Elements you want. it frees up alot of work and worry for any PC from scorching deserts to glacial wastelands. plus, you'd be amazed how much environmental clothing weighs and adds up quickly, especially when it gets wet. now we're in 3.5 ed and all, so craig did some creative research in the DMG and found that a Cloak of Resistance +1 (1k gp) could be coupled w/ Endure Elements w/out further raising the price beyond the spell's additional 1k gp. that is, you usually have to pay more when dumping something into an already enchanted slot item. he said since it was a 24 hr effect spell, it did not raise the price, so it's just another 1,000. ie)no additional tax as it were. poke through Frostburn. there's a fairly simplified listing of Temperature Bands and the protection necessary for each one. ideally, Cold Resistance takes care of most of them, but you should be looking into animal furs and the like. they even stipulate the difference between tunda/cold climate animal hides vs. just normal ones. |
| TrackStar03-14-08, 02:31 PM | wow, great advice everyone. thanks! |
| MnemonicSV03-15-08, 03:40 AM | Personally, I think your best investment is the boots of the winterlands (as bloodsoul mentioned), right out of the DMG. 2,500 gp ain't bad for all those benefits. |
