03-13-05, 05:27 PM Hi, I recently started playing D&D and I can't get my head around combat, at all! It seems really complicated!! Is there anywhere i CAN FIND A WAY TO LEARN COMBAT EASILY??

03-13-05, 06:12 PM sure try playing with a group that can take the time to show you how it works. You wont learn it all in one session, trust me it takes time. But after awhile things like attacks of oppurtunity, move action, standard action, full round action will make more sense to you.

03-14-05, 05:12 AM Step 1: Roll Initiative to see who goes first.

Step 2: In that order take turns wailing on the enemy's mage. If your enemy has no mage, start wailing on yours.

Step 3: Ask your DM if you can do something ridiculous, such as strike a pose while attacking to look good. Accept the penalty he states.

Step 4: Roll a 1. Your DM should have an evil smile on his face by this point.

Step 5: After your character embarasses himself, wait for either the fighter to kill everything (if you are level 8 or lower) or the Neutral good Cleric of the deity of peace to kill everything with a firestorm.

Step 6: Loot. Dont ask how or where the Beholder was holding 3000 gold, or why the number was exactly 3000.

Step 7: Count exp. Make sure you beg the DM for extra exp since he didnt take pity on your for your pose.

Step 8: Immediately start over at step 1. Any events that happen inbetween are inconsequential.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Any time the DM starts throwing out words like "Role Playing" and "Character development", immediately roll your eyes and act bored. If necessary, repeat a stupid joke over and over when not in combat. Your DM should catch on.

03-14-05, 02:48 PM The problem is, there's just myself and one other, a 1-on-1 game, and neither of us fully understands combat!! I know how the 2nd edition combat rules work, but I can't seem to get my head around 3rd edition combat rules, with the different kinds of actions, and what you can do in one round, and what actions you can combine on your turn??

Step 2: find an actual group (read More Than 2 People) who plays and start gaming with them.

D&D was made to be played with a group of 4-7 people (including the DM), and it's really a lot easier to learn if your doing than reading.

03-14-05, 03:44 PM Both you and your friend check out the rules. then you both do several areana style fights looking up the rules as needed, and if possiable get together with some one that knows 3e combat well to do this exeercise with them.

For some people, larger groups just aren't an option yet because they don't know anyone else who is interested, or they have to fit D&D into a busy schedule. Don't be so closed-minded; sometimes it's not as easy as finding another group.

In one round you can:
one move action + one attack action; or
two move actions; or
one full-round action.

Free action is just that; free unless DM says otherwise. For example, you can briefly bark order or say a simple sentence as a free action, but you cannot do the entire Gettysburg Address in a six-second combat round.

and what actions you can combine on your turn??
Exactly, what actions do you wish to combine?

Also, its not possible for us to get more players, its just the two of us, we have tried but we live in a very secluded area :)
