In a round you can make one free, move and one standard action.

So, when my friend was down in a fight, I made a 5 foot step (free action), cast a healing spell on (standard action) him, and draged him 1/2 of my movement speed (a move action), out of the fight.

Another friend said that he could then make a 5 foot step, and then take a move action, and a standard action. That way he could always move 5 feet more.

My comment was that you can't combine 5 foot step with a move action but with a standard or a full round action.

Any comments?

P.S. How much movement would be possible while draging someone?
( We used half, if you drag smn/sth close to your own weight)

The 5 foot step rule is only an option if its the only distance you move that round.

Take solice in the fact that at least everyone else was wrong too. :D

heres a reference for you:
From the SRD...
Take 5-Foot Step
You can move 5 feet in any round when you don’t perform any other kind of movement. Taking this 5-foot step never provokes an attack of opportunity. You can’t take more than one 5-foot step in a round, and you can’t take a 5-foot step in the same round when you move any distance.
You can take a 5-foot step before, during, or after your other actions in the round.

Hope that clears things up.

Not quite right. Technically, YOu can make as many "Free" actions as you want in a round. They're Free. This is, however, adjucated by your DM, though... if he or she has declared "Only one" then you're stuck. Now there are two other kinds of "Semi-free" actions, the Swift Action and the Immediate Action that you only get one of each a round. I think... I'm not completely conversant with those particular actions.

You can combine the 5ft step, as magenificent said, with any other actions so long as you haven't moved at all this round. For example, you can take a 5ft step back out of Attack of Opportunity range, Sheath your longsword (move action) and then draw your crossbow (move action without quickdraw).

Err... as for the Weight you can drag.... I think there's a chart in the PHB with the encumberance values for each strength score. They list just how much a character can drag and take a normal move, I believe....

Confirming what the others said: multiple free actions per round (You can take only a single "Swift or Immediate" action per round). 5ft step can not be taken if you move more any other amount that round.

Also: (From the SRD)

A character can lift as much as his or her maximum load over his or her head.

A character can lift as much as double his or her maximum load off the ground, but he or she can only stagger around with it. While overloaded in this way, the character loses any Dexterity bonus to AC and can move only 5 feet per round (as a full-round action).

A character can generally push or drag along the ground as much as five times his or her maximum load. Favorable conditions can double these numbers, and bad circumstances can reduce them to one-half or less.
