When you are grabbling you get no dexterity bonus to AC (page 156 players handbook) against the opponent you are grabbling. I wonder if this do imply that you also lose any deflection bonuses (such as from the item "ring of protection") and is it possible to fight defensible while grabbling or combat expertise?

My comon sense say no but my players say otherwise so a help here would be very usuful before we turn on each others throuts :(

The PH states you only lose Dex bonus to AC against opponents you aren't grappling. You retain it vs. the person you are grappling.

Fighting Defensivly and Combat Expertise grant Dodge bonuses to AC. Dodge bonuses are lost when you lose your Dex to AC. So you can still do these moves but no one but the person you are grappling will care. A Ring of Protection should work vs. everyone.

How about "Magic's weird", and then cut his ring finger off. :fight!:

Yes, indeed ibayboy is right. That, and antimagic zone. Deflection is a tough bonus to lose, and it's even extra useful against touch attacks (mainly against spells and incorporeal undead.
Why are you bringing this up, if I may ask? A player of yours got an item you regret giving? I only asking since your posts are dotted with sad faces.
