Ok in the above diagram:
B=Bad Guy
A= Ally
C= Equals my Character with a weapon that has a reach of 10 ft
X=empty 5 ft square

Can my Character make an attack on the Bad Guy? Using movement rules two diagonals is 15ft but after reviewing the charts in the back of the DMG it appears to be within the reach. If the answer is yes, do the two Allies create soft cover for the Bad Guy?

08-20-06, 12:45 PM First square of diagonal movement counts as 5ft (every other square diagonal counts double movement, starting with the second one), so yes you could attack him.

As for soft cover, I think there would be, but I'm not positive.

08-20-06, 01:13 PM Reach weapons don't follow the normal diagonal rules for movement. A 10' reach weapon can hit the enemy in your diagram (2 diaganals are measured as 10' for calculating reach).

In the errata, it states that creatures only provide cover for ranged attacks, not melee attacks (Technically there's no categorical difference between reach and non-reach melee attacks). So no, your opponent does not get cover.

08-20-06, 06:20 PM No. In the errata, it states that the word 'melee' on PH pg 151 should be 'ranged' (ignore the commentary and stick to the actual rules change). However, cover for non-adjacent melee attacks uses the ranged attack rules. Therefore, B gets cover from C.

If any line from this corner to any corner of the target’s square passes through a square or border that blocks line of effect or provides cover, or through a square occupied by a creature, the target has cover (+4 to AC).

Therefore, B gets cover from C.

Ok, let's say the corners of B's square are identified as 45, 135, 225, 315 with 0 (or 360) being straight up from B. The fact that the rule states "any corner" means that since C cannot draw a line from his 315 corner (I picked that one bc it would have the best chance of success) to ALL of B's corners (specifically B's 45 and 225) without passing through either of the A occupied squares, that B gets cover.
