(This rule was standard in 3e, but it became an optional rule in 3.5e.) Firing a ranged weapon into a grapple has a chance of striking the wrong target. Using a melee weapon to attack into a grapple does not normally give you a chance of striking the wrong target, but if the two grappling combatants also have 100% concealment (invisible or whatever) then your DM may judge it that way. Using Bull Rush provokes an AoO which has a chance to hit the wrong target. The Ellusive Target tactical feat from Complete Warrior can cause you to hit your teammate, too. Various spells can cause you to strike your teammates, including Random Action, Confusion, Suggestion and Domination. (Charm Person doesn't usually make you strike your teammates; it just gives you one more friend in the world.) |

Precise Shot simply removes the -4 penalty. You never risk to hit your friend. |
