Combat situation question [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-27-08, 03:38 PM Okay I hope this makes sense (especially my nifty little diagram below). This situation occured in our group the other night:

C ------>D
A--B

A is engaged in melee with B. C moves past B to attack D, and in so doing, moves through a square that B threatens. Note that C doesn't stop in the threatened square, but continues beyond to engage D in melee.

So B would get an attack of opportunity against C as C moves past him, correct?

How does this affect the combat between A and B - - does A get an AoO against B, when B turns to attack C? Is B considered flanked for that round when he attacks C? When do all of the AoO actually occur, and do the players roll them at that moment?

Also, the order of initiative is A, B, C and D. I guess this is what we were confused by: since this is all happening at the same time, how do you handle these AoO in the span of combat, and more specifically, do you resolve them all in that single round of combat?

01-27-08, 03:44 PM B gets and AoO against C, this doesn't affect A vs. B in any way.

Think of it as a backswing of an attack against A or something, I dunno.

Then C moves and rolls against D (assume C is less than 30' from D when the round begins). D then rolls against C.

And you are saying that B gets an AoO against C, but A gets no advantage against B.

When does B roll an AoO against C? At the end of the round, or before C rolls against D?

I guess we were wondering about the order of all these attack rolls since B could conceivably kill C with his AoO, and then there would be no attack against D.

01-27-08, 04:06 PM AoOs are resolved immediately as they are provoked. B rolls his AoO against C while C is still in the process of moving and before C attacks D. B could conceivably trip C with the AoO and prevent C from ever reaching D.
