What tacticts would you use when facing a CR 15 red dragon with a large party consisting of the following lvl 12 characters:

Paladin on warhorse with lance
Ranger specialized with Bow
Warrior on flying mount
Wizard (envoker)
Rogue
Priest
Rogue/Priest
Druid

#1: Open ground, no cover.

#2: In the draongs cave, probably with some cobolt or similar servants

With that many people you shouldn't have much problems with the dragon. Keep everyone flying give fire resistence to everyone and hack away.

Ok, I've never played combat with a red dragon as main mob, so lets say the dragons CR is higher so that party really have to work together to win.

Boost spells, resistance to elements and frost spells are mandatory, also the possibility to fly comes in handy, but are there any offensive tactics vs red dragons you would recommend?

Examples of tactics im looking for are surrounding it, using reach and range weapons, special spells working agains flying creatures and the like.

Dude, that red dragon is goin' down. I mean, 8 12th level characters vs 1 CR15 (+minions=not much). There's really not that much to worry about IMHO. Just buff everyone vs fire and take that dragon apart. Wiz- prepare cold spells. Everyone else do your best.

Try to ground it ...

Look to spells such as Earthbind (? Not sure the source .. our wizard used it in a fight against a black and we mopped the floor with it ... that coupled with the Druid casting Wall of Thorns pretty much did it in ... )

You could try catching it in a Evard's, or some other mobility restrictive spell ..

heck, even a slow spell would spell it's doom!!

Well, if the dragon is played like a being of his age and int should, than you're dead meat :P

Expect anything but fire (and be prepared against fire too) and expect him to be wearing as many magic items and buffs as your whole party together :schemes:

Don't even think of fighting him in his own cave. Otherwise expect minion (iron golems are likely), traps, magical wards, hidden caches of healing magic that the dragon can quickly and easily use during the battle, and dozends of escape routes of which most are only usable by dragons. In a nice red dragon cave expect your fire protection to be worn off after only a few rounds just for being inside his cave and taken environmental fire damage :(

Thanks for your feedback, even with different opinions on how this combat will end :P

Not fighting in her lair is a good advice, but the trick will be to get that dragon out into the open ;)

The DM is very good at scarying the players with great roleplaying, also beeing a great combat tactician using the everything to his advantage I'm really looking forward tio this ecounter :)

This encounter should end with the dragon flying away. He's got no reason to stick around and fight this group. If he's got a chance of getting killed, he should leave. A dragon can out speed almost any PC at that level.

Dragons aren't some mindless minion who'll just stay and get slaughtered. He'd fly away. He'd also remember who attacked him and get revenge later and under his own terms.

One thing I would suggest is arrows of dragon slaying for everyone that uses bows. They're a bit on the expensive side (1-2k each) so only 1-2 per person. The fort DC is only 10 but any dragon that you would use one on can make that. What you'll be looking for is for the bugger to roll a 1. It's a long shot but if you have 5 arrows heading his way there ALWAYS the chance that one will drop him. :D

You could also have wall of force ready in case he does a fly-by attack. Nothing says smackdown like hitting an invisible glass window at 100 MPH!
