Hello my name is Leo, and I have discovered a slight problem in the PHB 3.5. Now I am trying to find out the real maximum Strength Bonus for the Composite Shortbow. Now I know, in the DMG it says up to +2 Str bonus, however in the PHB it says that you can have one at +4.

Now, one of my players is arguing with me that it should be more than +2, while I say, that it is just a typo since all the publisher had to do was copy/paste, then replace every "longbow" with "shortbow".

I could really use a ruling on this one, since he won't believe me directly. Thank you very much and have a great day.

You sure you're reading 3.5? IIRC, there is no limit to max str bonus besides how much gold you wanna spend. You can have a +15 bow if you want, just hope you have the 40 str to use it without the -2 penalty.

I thought that the mas strength bonus is +4 for a longbow. It would make since to have the shortbow do +2 since it is a shortbow. You could meet half way and say it can be +3 or you can use the power I am DM and what I say is what it is. Or just not allow any shortbow above +2 available.

Question: Why does he want a shortbow instead of a long bow if he is using strength and is arguing about the pluses he most likely wants to do more damage. So why does he want the 1d6 shortbow instead of the 1d8 longbow and the increased range?

It has been discussed in http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=953821

#1. He is a rogue, so he can only use the shortbow. Plus he wants to use it on horseback I guess.

#2. I searched through, and found the answer I am looking for. Thank you very much and you have a great day.:fight!:

Hello my name is Leo, and I have discovered a slight problem in the PHB 3.5. Now I am trying to find out the real maximum Strength Bonus for the Composite Shortbow. Now I know, in the DMG it says up to +2 Str bonus, however in the PHB it says that you can have one at +4.D&D 3.0 (here (http://www.opengamingfoundation.org/srd/SRDEquipmentI.rtf)) had the following table (which implied a limit on mighty bows):
"Table: Special and Superior Items
Weapon or Armor Cost
--------------- ----
Weapon, masterwork +300 gp*
Arrow, bolt, or bullet, masterwork 7 gp
Arrow, bolt, or bullet, silvered 1 gp
Dagger, silvered 10 gp
Mighty composite shortbow
(+1 Str bonus) 150 gp
(+2 Str bonus) 225 gp
Mighty composite longbow
(+1 Str bonus) 200 gp
(+2 Str bonus) 300 gp
(+3 Str bonus) 400 gp
(+4 Str bonus) 500 gp
Armor or shield, masterwork +150 gp"

D&D 3.5 has no such table, and no limits.
